‘New’ Hat From the Past #19

Royal Hats to August 2, 1998 and a sunny yellow hat with wide silk hatband and back bow worn to church at Sandringham. The upswept brim (best visible in the bottom photo) is a precursor to many of the hats we see Queen Elizabeth wear today and doesn’t quite fit with the standard late 1990s millinery shapes that immediately come to mind when thinking of this era. Of all the hats we’ve seen during this series, I think this one is most wearable today.

    • Thanks for posting this, Jimbo! I’ve been searching for some identification of when it might have been, but unsuccessfully. There was a service at Craithie Church that year in commemoration of the 1st anniversary of Diana’s death, but yellow would have been an odd color choice for such a service, so I don’t think that’s it.

You shouldn’t think that people don’t appreciate your contributions when they don’t comment on your individual comments and additional photo contributions! Sometimes the replies are coming so hot and heavy that we can hardly keep up, and other times we might be sneaking a peek when we shouldn’t be (such as at work or in a meeting) and are not in a position to reply and forget to go back later! Your finds are excellent, and challenge all the rest of us to seek out additional obscure photos!

Also, I forgot which post it was on, but that AP video that HatQueen couldn’t play, I couldn’t play it either, and in fact can’t seem to play any other AP video either, so I wonder if it’s a matter of type of computer or device people are on.

      • Thank you for your kind words, Matthew. I’m really not as fragile as I may come across, but we all appreciate encouragement once in a while.
I think HQ is doing a bang-up job, and I can’t imagine HER being able to keep up with so many posts in such a short period of time.
As for the AP video, perhaps we need to plug in a password, or “belong” to it in order to view the videos….who knows! Technology evolves every day with lightning speed. Cheers.

  1. Lovely hat and I admire how the drape of the raincoats make them look elegant, but as a Californian it makes me sad that this is August attire. It reminds of a witticism falsely attributed to Mark Twain but still very true, “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.”

  2. I love this hat. The color is gorgeous. The size of crown and sweep of the brim are just right to my taste. This has been a fun series. You come up with so many interesting ways to fulfill our desire for royal hat watching HQ.
