to August 7, 1997 and an interesting hat worn in Porstmouth as the Queen boarded the royal yacht Britannia for a trip around Western Scotland (the hat’s earlier outing in France in 1992 is shown in the bottom photo). At first glance, this hat is a simply shaped one in yellow straw with a rounded crown and kettle brim. A closer look at the brim shows a second cartwheel brim in cream straw on the underside of the hat, giving the appearance that Her Majesty is sporting a pair of hats stacked on top of the other. Do you recall this creative and slightly cheeky design?

The underbrim seems a little reminiscent of a pith helmet — I’m surprised she never wore the hat in a location where that style was worn by the military or other officials.
Not many pix of this “double your fun” hat to be found!
Well, it’s certainly different! The white does give a break from all the yellow, but in an unusual way.
It’s a fun look. I like the way the white breaks up all that yellow.
Well, I like this better than the plain kettle brim (which I do not like at all). It’s interesting anyway!
Wow, that’s definitely a new one to me. Can’t say I’m a fan though. It’s been a long time since I trolled Getty’s archive and apparently a lot of photos have been added. Thanks for bringing so many of them to our attention.
This is fun isn’t it! I rather like it, do you think she could just whip the yellow one off if she fancied a change?
