‘New’ Hat From the Past #25

Royal Hats to August 7, 1997 and an interesting hat worn in Porstmouth as the Queen boarded the royal yacht Britannia for a trip around Western Scotland (the hat’s earlier outing in France in 1992 is shown in the bottom photo). At first glance, this hat is a simply shaped one in yellow straw with a rounded crown and kettle brim. A closer look at the brim shows a second cartwheel brim in cream straw on the underside of the hat, giving the appearance that Her Majesty is sporting a pair of hats stacked on top of the other.  Do you recall this creative and slightly cheeky design?

  1. The underbrim seems a little reminiscent of a pith helmet — I’m surprised she never wore the hat in a location where that style was worn by the military or other officials.

  2. Wow, that’s definitely a new one to me. Can’t say I’m a fan though. It’s been a long time since I trolled Getty’s archive and apparently a lot of photos have been added. Thanks for bringing so many of them to our attention.

  3. This is fun isn’t it! I rather like it, do you think she could just whip the yellow one off if she fancied a change?
