This Week’s Extras

Royal Hats

Luxarazzi writer Svenja provided excellent coverage (here, here, here, here and here) of last weekend’s marriage of Hereditary Prince Ferdinand of Leiningen and Princess Viktoria Luise of Prussia – both descendants of Queen Victoria. There were some very memorable hats along with an impressive bridal tiara. (Confessions of A Castelholic)

Carina Axelsson shared this self-portrait taken while walking her dogs in her chocolate Tyrolean hat

Princess Michael of Kent in a safari hat in PR photos for her new book about raising an orphaned cheetah as a teenager in Mozambique

Princess Sirindhorn of Thailand in a tall crowned white cloche hat

Queen Sonja and Crown Princess Mette Marit in cozy autumn hats for outdoor engagements this week.

Princess Beatrix opened the new Simavi office in Amsterdam yesterday in a repeated rusty brown hat with pyramid shaped crown

Hats that caught my eye recently:

Striking royal blue beaded cocktail hat with peacock feathers by UK based Butterfly Millinery
Three pink beauties from Australian brand Jill and Jack Millinery – a boater, a leather headpiece and a bowed percher
Luxurious jewel-tone felt trilbies from Goldust Millinery
This button percher with the most exquisite straw leaves from the Danish studio of Susanne Juul
Unusual headpiece of layered squares of crin in different shades of blue by William Chambers Millinery
Black and white laser cut stunner from New Zealand milliner Claire Hahn
Royal blue teardrop beret percher with effortlessly flying feathers by Rosie Olivia

And from the studio of legendary milliner Stephen Jones- a thread spool top hat variation and a trio of tandem boater hats in the most luminous lamé organza, modelled by longtime members of his staff. Bonkers but brilliant.

 Royal Hats

Prince Harry arrived in Toronto ahead of today’s opening of the Invictus games to fit in visits to mental health facilities and rub elbows with athletes (even acting as an alarm for one Aussie athlete catching a nap). For Canadian readers, the Invictus Opening Ceremony will be broadcast this evening on CTV.

  1. Wonderful, witty spool of thread hat!

The structure of Princess Beatrix’s hat is wonderful, and I love the autumnal colors, but I’m not so sure about the pyramid shape.

The black and white Claire Hahn is stunning. Does that shape make anyone else think of the late Duchess of Windsor?

  2. Love the pink straw boater by Millinery Jill, and the Stephen Jones thread spool top hat make me smile – such a sentimental design! I’ve never wanted to part with the Coats and Sylko wooden thread spools with thread still on them, still useable, which belonged to my dressmaker grandmother; some would be around 100 years old now.
