Hat From the Past

Royal Hats to this day in 1941 when the Duke and Duchess of Windsor arrived in Washington, the Duchess in an elegantly prim pillbox hat.

The Danish opening of Parliament this morning will undoubtedly see a number of hats worn by Queen Margrethe, Princess Mary, Princess Marie and Princess Benedikte – please use the comments to share links to these along with any others worn today.

  1. The pics you included in this post are not displaying on my computer (though all your other posts are displaying as normal) so I’m not sure which hat is the one you mean. I did find this video, which showcases 3 hats the Duchess wore during her 1941 USA visit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFp15iwFswI
I find teh Duchess’s hairstyle during this era quite severe, so I prefer her in large hats, which create their own focus.,

    • Mcncln: Thanks for the great video. To be honest with you, the hats did nothing for me – I enjoyed the men’s suits, and the fabulous CARS! 1941 was WAY before my time, but it just seemed like a more elegant, classy time to me. I love the old B/W movies also. Often, I think that I was born in the wrong era! Jimbo

    • Thanks so much for this video, mcncln, and I definitely agree with Jimbo that the early ’40s was a great era, stylewise. I still enjoy looking at my own parents’ photos from that time. I believe that the severity of the Duchess’s hairstyle and even of the clothing was common to that period, reflecting the wartime austerity – I thought all 3 of her hats in the video were elegant and yet very much in keeping with that tone.
