Ascot Day 1: The Queen

The first day of Royal Ascot kicked off today with a new hat for the Queen! In sunny yellow (your second guess for the hue of hat she’d wear today!), the design follows a familiar shape with straight, sided, slightly flared, dome topped crown covered in the same wool silk as Her Majesty’s coat and short straw cartwheel brim. The hat is trimmed with a blue silk hydrangea bloom wrapped in curling yellow straw bow loops and tails.

The colour is lovely and the straw brim and embellishment lighten the fabric covered crown. I’m less certain about the crafty-looking hydrangea trim and suspect a slimmer fabric binding on the brim would make it less clunky but these finishing quibbles aren’t new ones and the Queen wears the sunny hat very well.

  1. A lovely shade of yellow on HM – the brooch works wonderfully with it. I really wish Angela Kelly would stop making hats.

  2. I also picked yellow for the first day!!! I’m picking pink for tomorrow: Along with others I don’t care for the inferior quality of the hydrangea trim for while the color is lovely it lacks depth and polish. There’s always tomorrow and I’m hoping she’s Pretty in Pink for Ascot Day #2!

  3. While some of Angela Kelly’s designs are not executed so well, this hat is absolutely lovely! In the sea of neutrals, this stands out immensely! My only complaint about this whole ensemble is that it’s a redux of Easter 2016; I even double checked to see if the dress was the same (which it’s not). Instead of blue with the yellow, I wonder what a deep apricot or burnt orange would look like with this yellow instead of the blue?

  4. I like the sunny yellow on HM. It is bright and cheerful and I like that you can see her dress peeking out. It helps to make better sense of the blue flower on her hat.

  5. It’s a lovely shade of yellow and very flattering even if it does seem to be a repeat – maybe HM thinks it’s a lucky color! And I love her smile – you can tell she really is in her happy place!

  6. This lovely clear yellow sings on HM. I wish the hydrangea was about half the size though and the entire hat was in straw.

  7. This is nice and all, but I just don’t see why it was needed. This is the fourth, very similar yellow outfit that she’s worn to Ascot in as many years. And for my money the 2015 one with cabbage flowers and the 2016 with the blue flowers (both Trevor Morgan I hasten to add), are superior to this one. So fine, but I hope there’s something a little more interesting to come.

  8. This deeper richer yellow is wonderful on HM, this more saturated hue is really striking compared to some of the more, shall we say, timid yellows she has worn the recent past –but it did seem like, on first glance, this was a repeat or at least a color combo we have seen a lot. That said, while the looping straw trim is lovely and a great accent, the hydrangea looks plonked on and not of the quality it should be for a Queen’s hat. Small quibbles though, as HM looks fantastic overall! Especially so with the added treat of a relatively rare brooch!!

    • I agree that this is an excellent shade of yellow — not all shades are equally flattering. I do agree with those who have said that the flower is a little too large, but I wonder if it might have looked a little more appropriate if we could have seen more of the dress underneath.

  9. I thought she would wear yellow as well, seeing how the queen had worn yellow hats to Ascot these past few years, and she hadn’t worn yellow in a while.

When I first saw it, I thought it was a repeat. Does the queen not have another bright yellow hat with blue floral trim?

  10. I can’t believe she wore yellow!!! That was my first choice. Oh well. Come on gang, give me s good color for tomorrow.

    • Me too! The Queen looks fabulous!

Also, wonderful news about Zara Tindall! I’m happy for her and her husband, but sad for all of us since we won’t see her hat gorgeousness at Royal Ascot.
