Ascot Day 2: Princess Anne, Peter & Autumn Phillips

Princess Anne took in the second day of racing at Ascot today, joined by her son and daughter-in-law. She repeated her cream straw teardrop percher hat with upturn on the rounded back of the design. Lavishly trimmed with looped straw bows, silk flowers and large bows in white net, the light hat is well suited to a day at the races. I’m not a great fan of its pairing today with Anne’s brown silk dress and beaded ivory jacket (its “a whole lot of biscuit” to quote a favourite comment here) and would have preferred the piece paired with something more colourful. This is one of the more modern millinery pieces in Anne’s wardrobe and I’m afraid this outfit brings it down.

While I was a bit disappointed in Anne’s chocolate biscuit look, Autumn Philips did not disappoint, topping her blue and white printed dress with a matching sidesweeping percher saucer hat embellished with a mass of trimmed white feathers curving out from beneath the hat’s raised brim. The colour is so lovely on Autumn, as is the scale, and the upward soaring hat works so beautifully with this dress. If one must wear a high ruffled neck, this is the kind of hat to pair with it!

  1. This is a great hat for Anne, but the outfit is all wrong. I’d be onboard with keeping this blazer, but it imagine it with a navy dress, and then she could wear her navy gloves and navy or beige shoes, and this would look much better.

Autumn, on the other hand, looks utterly fantastic! My only complaint is I think this particular size and shape of saucer/disc hat can be difficult to place at the perfect angle, and here at certain angles it looks like it had slid up her head (if that makes sense). Whether this is a design or placement flaw is hard to determine, but otherwise I love this. Her outfit is especially unexpected, but it’s amazing. Brava!

Peter’s top hat looks great on him, but I do think his beard looks a bit unkempt; clean up those edges and he’d be in perfect form!

  2. Lately I have been very impressed with Autumn’s sartorial choices. She has been one of the best dressed royal family members this year, starting with Easter, Harry’s wedding, Trooping the Colour and now Ascot. Her style has matured quite a bit.

  3. Love Autumn Phillips outfit and hat – would have loved to see her hair in a French Pleat but that’s a minor niggle. Princess Anne’s hat is very nice, her clothes choices are what they are.

  4. I’m sorry to say that I feel that Autumn’s hat is a mismatch with her boho/casual dress and hair-down look. There is a fantastic opportunity here to pick up the sweeping sculptural shape of the white feathers. A simple linear dress in a light colour, and an updo, would magnify and follow the haute elegant, almost classical lines I see in this hat. Whereas the patterned dress is relaxed, loose, whimsical and unstructured; so to my eye a fun hat like a straw boater would be a better choice.

  5. Autumn looks fab yet again. She’s doing a Sophie on us and growing in style and confidence isn’t she. She always gets it right these days.

  6. Autumn Philips looks delightful—what a beautifully playful hat! Princess Anne’s hat is certainly the highlight of an otherwise lackluster costume.

  7. Autumn is by far my winner of Day 2. Her hat beautifully compliments her dress whilst not being overly matchy. The rear view particularly shows how the upswept feathers echo the pattern of the dress. This is also a great example of how to wear hair down with a hat. I agree the angle of this hat and the upswept feather trim balances the high neckline; I hadn’t even realized it was ruffled until HatQueen pointed it out!

  8. Lovely hat on the Princess Royal and it looks like it might have been purchased within the last five years 😀 The outfit doesn’t really go with it though. If she had to wear this dress & jacket, then she should have worn the hat with the pheasant feathers under the brim.
Autumn looks lovely and the hat is perfectly suited to this dress. I wonder what it would have looked like to have the sweeping feathers on top of the brim rather than under though?

  9. The hats were lovely and I agree about Anne’s jacket. It was bulky and didn’t fit well. Her hat was very nice, and Autumn’s hat and dress paired beautifully. It’s always nice to see this close knit family hanging out together.

  10. Well this is the third outfit in a boring color. 1 for Camilla and 2 for Anne. I completely understand a neutral look but not for Ascot.

Autumn looks fantastic! This is a very interesting hat and is perfect compliment to the patterned dress. In some ways so simple and yet striking and interesting!

  11. I love the way the white feathers in Autumn’s hat draw your eyes up and away from the buttoned up collar on her dress. I think the hat made the outfit. She has definitely become a major hat contender. I keep my eyes out for her.

  12. The hats are all stunnning and well suited to the wearer. However, as lovely as the beaded fabric is on Anne’s jacket the jacket does not fit her well. She should have left the jacket at home to be remade.

    • I agree Beth and Intriguedbyroyals, the jacket looks tight, its evening-wear strength embroidery is competing with the subtle fabrications and textures of the hat; and thirdly it’s a darker yellowed shade of beige which is not flattering to the Princess. The dress sans jacket would be lovely (as long as the 2 slightly different shades of brown in the gloves and bag were addressed :)) Actually I would love to see The PR add a jacket in a soft rose pink.
