King Philippe and Queen Mathilde were welcomed in Vienna this morning by Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen and his wife Doris Schmidauer for a quick, one-day visit centered around opening a Belgian exhibition at the Art History Museum of Vienna. For this trip, Queen Mathilde topped a new forest green portrait collared dress with a matching felt brimless hat.

The folded design has an organic shape that references both a calot and beret- while the shape doesn’t fit traditional millinery categories, the fluid lines on the hat and dress work beautifully together. I’m not always a fan of head to toe looks in the same colour but slight variations in shade between these pieces (enough just to notice but not to clash!) and excellent proportions I think, makes this pairing work.

What do you think of Queen Mathilde’s new hat in Vienna today?

I think we’re so lucky to have so many beautiful Queens (and near Queens 😉) at this time … Queen Mathilde looks lovely – that hat is very cute I think … maybe it could be brought forward a little more but really – a very smart outfit !
Well of course I love this! This forest green is a beautiful color for Mathilde, and the dress is a wonderful design, especially with the collar and shoulders. I’ve never been a big fan of Fabienne Delvigne’s organic designs as they often seem too random and unrefined for a hat, but it works better with the smaller scale of this hat. What I don’t care for here is the placement of the hat on Mathilde’s head; if it was closer to her forehead it would be better IMO.
This shape looks original without being eccentric and goes so well with the open collar. She looks lovely in this shade of green.
Not my favorite shape, but the colour is marvelous and the hat works great for this event and with this dress.
I find it interesting that Mathilde spent her first 16 royal years with only one green hat and then debuted two new green hats this year. I hope this trend continues because green is definitely her colour.
I love the color the dress and the calot/beret hybrid. It’s quite unique and I definitely prefer it to Mathilde’s many turbans. The monochrome look doesn’t bother me since this shade of green suits Mathilde very well. Btw. the exhibition is about Peter Bruegel the Elder and it sounds spectacular.

Thanks for the link, kat. Looks like an amazing exhibition.
Thank you ever so much for posting the link. Always had a special interest in his work.
The entire ensemble has an organic look to me which works very well with the luscious green shade. She looks very elegant, as usual.
I really like the entire outfit. Well done. I still wonder why the royals carry clutch type purses instead of something with handles or straps. My hand would ache.
Overall one of the best Royal outfits I have seen.
Although I think I would have liked a traditional beret a little better with this dress, the color looks great on Mathilde, and I agree that the color and fabric are perfect for a fall event.
Very well done for fall season as well as an indoor/outdoor event hat.
Agree!
I am not a fan of this calot / beret, but love the dress!!! Can anyone tell me which brand it is?
the dress is from Natan, the hat Fabienne Delvigne
Thank you!
