The Danish Royal Family gathered together today in Copenhagen for the official opening of Parliament. This annual event is often occasion to debut new hats and today, there were three new beauties! Queen Margrethe led her family in a smart new ensemble in cornflower blue. Covered in the same silk crepe as her dress and tailored jacke, the matching brimless hat is simply trimmed with a stitched twist bow on the side. While I think I’d prefer the hat more if it was more of a calot on the back of Margrethe’s head instead of this helmet-like style, its a go-to shape for her and the colour is wonderful. We’ll undoubtedly see the ensemble many times again but I think it’s a good addition to her wardrobe.

Princess Benedikte also wore a new hat, a wide brimmed chocolate felt design with simply shaped, rounded crown, trimmed with a felt hatband and autumnal-hued spray of feathers on the side. The combination of hat, chocolate wrap and orange dress is a good one and the ensemble has that effortless elegance we often associate with Princess Benedikte.

Thoughts about this quartet of royal hats today in Copenhagen?
I agree with Jake – a magenta hat for Mary would have looked splendid ! I love Marie’s outfit (but then I’m always a sucker for blue and white ) … the Queen will always be lovely in whatever she wears .. I don’t look at her clothes i just look at that smile 😊 and the orange and brown of her sister is just gorgeous !
I like all these hats – but not a fan of Mary’s outfit. Benedikte and Marie in particular look terrific!
I love all the hats. I am not a big fan of Marie’s outfit but it’s okay. Everyone else is wearing wonderful ensembles. I love the brown cape worn by Benedikte and Mary’s swishy skirt.
A bit odd Margarethe would choose a whole new ensemble in a color that’s very similar to this one (https://royalhats.net/2015/05/01/british-royal-wedding-four-years-on-european-royal-guests/), but I like that she chose a short jacket and the more modern/subdued twists for the beret.
I wish Mary’s hat had been magenta/fuchsia in color to tie in with her skirt/dress more and make her whole look a little more upbeat; the black hat, especially with the black jacket and her dark hair, kinda drags down the whole look for me.
Marie’s whole look is so polished and well coordinated! The hat is not my favorite, but this whole look is something anyone could wear without the need for a special occasion, so if you’re looking for inspiration to wear a hat, this is definitely a great choice to emulate.
Benedikte is definitely my favorite of this group, despite my dislike of brown. She wears wide brims so well, even with her short hair, and the feathers on this one are done perfectly. The coral orange dress is the perfect choice to brighten up the ensemble and keeps the brown from making everything look too drab. Again, another hat and look to emulate for this fall/winter if you need inspiration. Brava!
I wonder if this blue ensemble might be replacing the one you mentioned, Jake?
Great color for Queen Margarethe, and the twist trim is just right. But I agree with the consensus (so far) that Princess Benedicte’s classic style is the winner.
Princess Benedikte wins my vote by a mile! Even BROWN can look fantastic, and very autumnal! The two younger hats are business as usual (boring).
I love the new blue ensemble – the hat not so much. Princess Benedikte’s hat is great – as well as the rest of her outfit. So effortlessly elegant. The young generation’s hats are fine but not more.
Everyone looks very elegant. I could wish that The Queen had chosen a slightly different colour for her new ensemble, because, as much as I like it, it does remind me of the infamous “Teletubbie” hat she has worn so many times. For sheer pizzazz I would vote for Princess Benedikte in her glamorous outfit!
