to June 2002, the year that saw numerous foreign monarchs join their British royal cousins for Ascot. Queen Silvia’s magenta straw square crowned hat with sideswept brim suited her so well in terms of colour and shape while Queen Margrethe’s watermelon pink straw picture hat with double brim trimmed with orange and paler pink straw twists remains one of my all-time favourites for her.

I’m trusting you not to miss any new royal hats that happen to be worn today- please share and discuss any in the comments as well.

Oh my goodness! These two hats are perfect! The two queens looks splendid. That magenta color is perfect on Queen Silvia. Queen Margrethe is vibrant in the pink and coral – and with daisies in the fabric of her dress!
I love both queens’ hats. I’d wear them today if I had them. The colors of their outfits are fantastic.
I am in agreement with everyone’s positive comments about the two queen’s hats. I wonder if Jimbo is around to comment on Henrik’s hat. It looks a little small to me.
You are right, it IS a tad small. Too high above his ears. Chicago Chuck is actually the 🎩 expert. Personally, I like to dig up photos of the featured hats worn at other times.
BTW, both queens look fantastic.
MrFitzroy’s first thought was stated in Sunny’s comment….Queen Silvia’s hat looks like (with some minor reshaping) it could be in Queen Elizabeth’s current (workday) rotation! Quite amazing that it is 16 years old (or maybe not)!!
Dear HatQueen…..if you are monitoring these posts, we hope you are enjoying your time off, and getting lots accomplished with the parts of your life that do not revolve around royal hats! The amount of work you did to set up this wonderful retrospective series is much appreciated, and a classic example of all the hard work and dedication you place here….you are the best!
That’s such a kind comment. It’s wonderful to be able to leave this ongoing conversation in all of your capable hands at times such as these, when I need to step away.
I agree, this is also one of my favorite hats ever for Margarethe! Despite it obviously matching her outfit, that for once doesn’t bother me.
Silvia’s is nice, but to me, her hat feels a bit dated and is very 2000s for me, contrary to others’ opinions; I think Margarethe’s, although more avant-garde, would still fit in with all the shapes, styles, and designs we see now.
I love both hats, I love both the strong hot pink and the watermelon/coral, and I especially like the double brim for QM. I like these larger hats on her more than some of the smaller ones she wears.
A bit OT: I have a perennial fascination with the ascot nametags- who wears them, why, under what circumstances, and what they say. Of interest to me here (and probably no one else)- Queen Silvia doesn’t wear one but the other three monarchs/regents do. This happens sometimes with our British royals so maybe there’s some element of personal preference? And why do the Danes wear two? I can’t read the two gentlemen’s, but both of QM’s read HM the Queen of Denmark. Seems weird to have two identical nametags.
I wonder if it is something to do with which enclosure oneis entitled to enter?
I love both of these. So bright, flattering and fun – just perfect for Ascot. Sophie looks nice in the back too.
Actually Queen Silvia’s hat wouldn’t look out of place in Queen Elizabeth’s current hat rotation lol!
QM’s hat is so gorgeous. I love the double brim and color contrasts. It pairs beautifully with her lovely summer dress. She really looks like Ascot perfection!
QS’s hat is brilliant on her. The two Queen’s together are a delight and I wish they would attend Ascot more often.
Nice to also catch a glimpse of the Countess of Wessex in there as well!
This may be my favorite of HQ’s Ascot retrospective! Of course Queen Margrethe would bring it for this occasion. It is indeed lovely to see her with Prince Henrik with his dash of purple.
Queen Silvia also looks perfect. Wish she would wear hats on this scale more often and perhaps persuade her daughters to do the same. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Carl Gustaf in a top hat before.
Thanks for these posts, HatQueen! They are such an antidote to grey winter days.
I agree that the watermelon pink hat looks tremendous on QM! The colour, scale and quirkiness factor are all just right. I love the picture of QM and PH strolling along together so happily. They look like they fully intend to have a wonderful time and hopefully they did.
QS also looks great in her own vivid and pretty hat. What a treat it must have been to see these two colourful ladies together on that day.
I agree heartily with everything you said! The image of Margrethe and Henrik arm in arm is lovely. She must miss him terribly.
I know everyone smiles on these occasions but this seemed entirely genuine. Lovely.
Fab hats – I wish we had more foreign royals at the races. Silvia’s titfer would still work now, that’s a fab colour on her too. I’m less sure how well Margrethe’s would date, but that’s never bothered her anyway. And I love her practical glove storage solution!
Looking more closely at the photo, it looks as if Queen Margrethe has stuffed a pair of grey gloves into her belt! Or am I just seeing things?
Indeed! A truly delightful pair of hats! So much colour, so much verve! Both hit just the right note!
