Ascot Hats From the Past

Royal Hatsto the first Ascot races in 1946 following a hiatus during WWII and a young Princess Elizabeth with her aunt, both in flower trimmed hats. Princess Elizabeth’s angular hat feels fashionably jaunty and interestingly similar in shape to a design her granddaughter would wear to the same event, 56 years later.

Ascot Hat From the Past

Royal Hats to June 16, 1981 and a wide-brimmed lilac straw hat with double hatband and wonderful ostrich trim that caught all eyes at Ascot. This was one of Lady Diana Spencer’s earliest hats worn in public – she would marry the Prince of Wales a month later.

Ascot Hat From the Past

Royal Hats twenty-three years to June 21, 1996. While the Queen Mother’s blue veiled capulet hat is a classic and very recognizable millinery look for her, the Countess of Snowdon’s ecru straw design with black stripes is a unique shape I can’t remember seeing on another royal hat- can you?

Ascot Hat From the Past

Royal Hats to June 14, 1966, nearly 53 years ago, and a pair of Danish princesses (who were 2nd cousins, once removed) arriving at Ascot. The glamorous Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent, wore a feather covered pillbox while a fresh-faced Princess Benedikte of Denmark wore a straw Breton hat.

Ascot Hat From the Past

Royal Hats to the arrival of Queen Sonja and Queen Beatrix to Royal Ascot on June 18, 2002. This year saw multiple monarchs attend the famous races (we’ll see more in coming days) including Grand Duke Henri, who can be spotted in this arrival carriage as well. Queen Sonja wore a rounded bumper hat with crown in the same fabric as her coat while Queen Beatrix pulled out the stops with an oversize black and white straw picture hat with double brim and floral explosion ’round the back.
