Hats From the Past

Royal Hats86 years to this day in 1933 and an outing, by members of the British Royal Family, to the British Industrial Fair. It’s a look at two quintessential hat shapes- the young Princess Royal and Duchess of York in cloches that were so stylish at the time and Queen Mary in a striped toque.

Ascot Hats From the Past

Royal Hatsto the first Ascot races in 1946 following a hiatus during WWII and a young Princess Elizabeth with her aunt, both in flower trimmed hats. Princess Elizabeth’s angular hat feels fashionably jaunty and interestingly similar in shape to a design her granddaughter would wear to the same event, 56 years later.

Hat From the Past

Royal Hats one hundred years to a silver anniversary celebration and two lovely summer hats. On July 6, 1918, the future King George V and Queen Mary celebrated 25 years of marriage with four of their six children (the Prince of Wales and Prince John are not pictured). While the men’s military uniforms show the country was still in the throes of WWI and Queen Mary’s voluminous feathered toque looks plucked straight from a Victorian fashion catalogue, the future Countess of Harewood’s flower trimmed boater looks modern, fresh, and rather hopeful.

Hats From The Past

Yesterday, Princess Anne attended the annual Not Forgotten Association Christmas Party, a national tri-service charity which provides entertainment, leisure and recreation for the serving wounded, injured or sick and for ex-service men and women with disabilities. While she did not wear a hat, Buckingham Palace released two nostalgic photos of a royals at this same event- below is a young Duke and Duchess of York in 1921 and the late the late Princess Mary (daughter of King George V and Queen Mary) in what looks like the 1940s. The resemblance between Princess Mary and Queen Elizabeth is remarkable- as are the hats!
