Last Sunday, Princess Hisako wore a jaunty cream felt hat with purple hatband for the annual Japanese Tableware Festival
On Tuesday, Princess Hisako attended a photography exhibition at Sankeien Garden in Yokohama. She repeated her grey felt hat with Pork Pie crown and short, kettle brim with wide burgundy hatband and side spray of feathers for this event.
On Friday, Crown Prince Naruhito and Crown Princess Masako attended the 64th National Youth Book Report Contest award ceremony in Tokyo. Princess Masako wore a burgundy felt hat with domed crown and short, upturned Kettle brim, simply trimmed with a wide velvet hatband.

British milliner Dillon Wallwork shared this peek into a sketchbook he used while working for Philip Somerville. It’s fascinating.
The following new millinery designs caught my eye this week:

Wonderful striped ribbon placement on this navy straw percher from Italian milliner Giulia Mio
Lovely embroidery of spring flowers on this cream straw bandeau by Ukrainian milliner Elena Martynenko
Sky blue straw percher with flowers and soaring twists by Yorkshire milliner Justine Bradley-Hill
Pale pink straw upswept saucer with silk peonies by Spanish milliner Eugenia Jiménez
Practically perfect Mary Poppins vibe on this crimson wool felt design from Italian brand Birdcage Hats
Statement black straw picture hat with woven green brim overlay & feathers from Aussie brand Millinery by Mel
Adore the movement on this blue straw and crin percher by Spanish-based British milliner Donna Hartley
The prettiest pale green and grey headpiece by Ghanan milliner Velma Owusu Bempah
Stunning black and white straw sculptural pinwheel design made by Australian milliner Chris Mullane at a workshop taught by Dutch milliner Eugenie van Oirschot (see the finished hat here with some others from the workshop)

And from Spanish brand Conchitta, this cream picture hat with pleated brim and feather flowers. It’s exquisite.
A BBC documentary on Princess Margaret airs in North America tonight on PBS (thanks Shannon for sharing this!)
Reader Lisa also shared this fascinating article about the folded headdresses worn my Malaysian monarchy, following our discussion last week on the new Sultan’s coronation headgear. It’s worth a read.
Princess Akiko’s cultural organization, Shinyusha, hosted a traditional clothing workshop at the Kamigamo Shrine on January 26, 2019. During the workshop, she donned a traditional jūnihitoe.

The PBS documentary on Princess Margaret last night was wonderful. I wish they would do a exhibition on her glorious hats. At one point Hat Queen I thought of you as they showed a glimpse of a magazine article with 20+ photos of Princess Margaret in various hats. How wonderful would that be to frame that photo display!
Also, I am currently reading Jennifer Robson’s book titled “The Gown.” It blends historical detail through the eyes of 3 women – 2 who are embroidering Princess Elizabeth’s wedding gown. The Royal Family, Norman Hartnell and Christian Dior appear in this excellent piece of historical fiction. It’s a fun read.
Shannon, The Gown is on my list, so I appreciate your positive review. Hope to get to it soon.
It’s quite enjoyable to read. Sometimes historical fiction can be a bit dry. Jennifer Robson is a skilled writer!
I also enjoyed the documentary and LOVE book recommendations- thanks for this one!
You are welcome! Another great book (or rather series) are the Maggie Hope series by Susan Elia MacNeal. Maggie Hope is a spy during WW2 and works for Princess Elizabeth, The King and PM Churchill. Historical fiction and quite fun. I read recently the Clinton’s are big fans, so high recommendations for Susan Elia MacNeal! Check out your local library for them.

LOVE the Maggie Hope Series!!
I could imagine Conchitta’s hat on Princess Haya.
Thanks Lisa and HatQueen for that article about the tengkolok! Glad to know even more about these headdresses now.
The Japanese Imperial family had a busy week! Princess Akiko seems to have a way with young people. Love the traditional garments, especially the jūnihitoe.
HatQueen, I notice several unfamiliar milliner names among the new designs this week, which makes me think the royal ladies have dozens of choices for spectacular hats. “Exquisite” is the right word for the Conchitta hat. The Chris Mullane pinwheel design is spectacular.
The Queen attended a church service at Sandringham today
Maja, thanks for including yesterday’s church outing for HM, her last one during this year’s Christmas holiday. I’ve always liked this sunny yellow ensemble, even with the somber grey dress underneath. I wonder if a different, yellow dress was also made for the hat/coat combination. The queen looked wonderful yesterday, amid the rain and gloomy weather.
Today, she traveled back to London in an interesting coat. At first, I didn’t get the tan dress/grey striped coat together, but when I found the coordinating hat, it all made sense to me. I’m still not a fan of mixing grey and tan.

Funny how different individual tastes are- I love the pattern of this coat, even on its own without the hat. Such beautiful texture!
The Swedish King and Queen also attended world cup races, the King in his trusty brown fedora.
Check out Queen Silvia at the skiing! she looks as pretty as a picture in her billboard-bright patriotic beanie.
Most people aren’t flattered by lurid beanies featuring huge lettering (not that it matters for an event like this), but Silvia comes alive in horizontal stripes, high contrast colours, and “cute ” details e.g. a pompom, thanks to her gamine features –which mean that this hat makes her look feminine, youthful and fresh as a daisy.
I often wish this Queen would branch out from the classic styles she most often wears, and wear more lively patterns and designs like this one. I understand that every mature queen wants to project a classic image, but I’d love to see her wear lots more hats with eyecatching colour contrast (like HM often does) ..e.g instead of another hat in safe and predictable monochrome.
The photos of the Norwegian and Swedish royals watching ski racing are so fun! I love when these families get together!
The Conchitta hat is drop dead gorgeous! Wow! Such a stunner! I can see the Countess of Wessex wearing that.
The Velma Owusu Bempah headpiece is so exquisite. How beautiful would Lady Louise or Lady Margarita look in that?
The Birdcage “Mary Poppins” (good one Hat Queen) is so beautiful. I’d love to see Zra Tindall, CP Mary or the Duchess of Cambridge (of course) in it. Beautiful design.
The Justine Bradley-Hill blue spring flower hat is so beautiful for Easter. I think it would be so pretty on Lady Louise or Princess Eugenie. Although Autumn Phillips would be quite lovely in that pastel shade.
The Elena Martynenko bandeau with lovely colorful embroidery would be perfect for CP Mette-Marit.
I love, love, love the green and black statement hat by Millinery by Me. Either Princess Beatrice or Princess Eugenie would look striking in that. It looks like snakeskin. Such wonderful detailed work.
