The Dutch State visit to Ireland continued its third and final day today with visits in Cork, Cobh and Camden Fort Meagher. For today’s program, Queen Máxima repeated her wrapped calot hat in pale beigey-pink natural fibres.
Even though we’ve not seen this design on Máxima in nearly five years, there’s not much new to say about it. The calot shape frames her face nicely and the colour of the hat matches nicely with this ensemble, but the wrapped look of the hat, which I suspect is supposed to come across as free form and artistic, is simply messy. Máxima wears saturated and jewel tones so well, this ensemble compares in comparison to countless other looks that simply suit her better. Let’s hope she’s got something spectacular in her suitcase for the Order of the Garter service on Monday.

We’ve not seen this calot in a while- what do you think about it’s outing in Ireland today?

Well, I’m disappointed this didn’t disappear in 2014. I’ve only ever liked this one at the Cambridge wedding; ever since the hairstyle and hat shape never works right, and it usually disappears into her hair. At the very least, wearing an all-yellow outfit could’ve helped brighten this look, but with all the other beige mixed in, it drags everything down.
I was also thinking in certain shots the hat disappears into her hair. I don’t like the overall look of pinky beige with yellow, especially on Maxima, who suits bolder colours so well.
I’d forgotten all about this hat’s debut at the wedding of Prince William in 2011. Absolutely stunning, especially with the addition of those diamond stars at the back!

With a small hats it’s all about the presentation and the outfit — and this calot looks so different from its 2011 debut, in this low-key outfit (though I’m not sure if anything Maxima wears can truly be described as low-key :)), where the emphasis is on the scarf and trench coat, and the earrings are visually quite subtle. I think the scarf is too dominating (except when tucked into the front of the coat)- but I enjoy how this hat style works with the trench coat, and I don’t mind the folds in the hat’s design.
I have yet to see a turban-inspired calot that I like. This one is also in an unfortunate color as it almost blends with her hair from a distance. It worked a bit better in previous outings paired with the emerald dress but the beige trench coat isn’t helping at all *keeps fingers crossed for Monday*
