to the early 1980s and this blue cloche with darling butterfly trim. While we see LOTS of feathers and flowers trimming royal millinery, there are surprisingly few butterflies.

I’m not sure there’s actually a butterfly here, but in news reports from today (22 September 2019), when this hat was worn for its third time, I believe, it is stated that there are black butterflies on this hat.
Perhaps someone has a better picture.

Fairbanks, this looks more like a flower of some sort, not a butterfly. Here is its first appearance for your consideration.

Thanks for the better picture. I couldn’t spot butterflies, but someone named Bridie Pearson-Jones from mailonline refers to the “delicate black butterflies on [Queen Elizabeth’s] hat – which contrasted the bright blue of her suit.”
I do like the hat, though, beautiful color; since she’s always to wear black shoes and purse, she might as well have black in the outfit too.
In Hat Queen’s first description, she mentions leaves and a dahlia bloom, and she is the authority on all things millinery!
Here’s the whole suit from its 2nd outing. (Buckingham Palace this time, so the ensemble must be a traveling outfit!)

We recently saw a butterfly headpiece on Princess Caroline from 1977, and there was another one from Scandanavia, I think . . .
This one is a little more subtle than her granddaughter’s (Phillips wedding, 2008):

my Hall of Fame hat!
The photo of today’s hat was actually taken in October of 1977 during a tour of Canada. Queen Elizabeth looks wonderful in this blue color.
She wore it again in Hyde Park to “the Greatest Children’s Party,” accompanied by a scary clown. The video should give some amusement today.

That’s pretty funny, Jimbo! HM carries on with her usual aplomb.
I love this too! Much more restrained than the bouquets that adorn some of HM’s hats nowadays. Very pretty.
I agree! A good hat: fine shape, neat and sharp, the butterflies just adding a feminine touch.
Lovely hat. Is this the first time Her Majesty has worn a butterfly adornment?
Shanon, funny that you should ask. Not only her hat, but a dress as well!

HM has a butterfly brooch made of diamonds and rubies, which is not worn often. It was a wedding gift from the Dowager Countess of Onslow. (boy, does that name conjure up humorous images from about 25 years ago!)

Thanks Jimbo! I knew you would come through for me! What would we do without you? 🙂
