This Week’s Extras

On Wednesday, October 23, Swazi King Mswati III and his newest wife, Inkhosikati LaMashwama arrived in Sochi to take part in the 2019 Russia-Africa Summit. Inkhosikati LaMashwama wore a magenta straw disc percher hat trimmed with straw twists, rosettes, feathers and sparkle crin bows

On Thursday, October 24, Princess Yoko wore a sunny, tall-crowned cloche to open the 46th Tokyo Motor Show. The same day, Princess Kiko wore a beige silk covered bumper hat with smocked side panel to open the Meiji Jingu Museum

Also on October 26, Queen Margrethe repeated her tan, caramel, chocolate and burgundy checked hat with short  brim and stacked hatbands for military awards and parades at Fredericia. Crown Prince Frederick wore a Tyrolean hat to host a hunt on the Gludsted Plantation in central Jutland on Monday, October 28.
The Imperial Princesses in hats on Monday for the 3rd court enthronement banquet. Last Sunday, a memorial for the Prince of Mikasa (Takahito) was held on the third anniversary of his death. Crown Princes Kiko, Princess Mako, Princess Kako, Princess Yuriko of Mikasa, Princess Akiko, Princess Yoko and Princes Tsuguko were all in attendance in demure black hats.

On Thursday, Queen Maxima repeated her warm brown straw picture hat with high upswept brim.
The following new millinery designs caught my eye this week:
And from British milliner, millinery instructor and millinery flower maker Ann Tomlin, this whimsically wonderful green button percher trimmed with a handmade wildflower garden. It’s just so charming.

  1. The fourth enthronement banquet! Great for royal watchers, especially when we get to see the kimonos, but doesn’t it seem as though they’d be partied out by now?

Frederick’s appearance in the Tyrolean hat convinces me that he needs to embrace hat wearing! I’m sure Jake would agree.

I like the smocked side panel of Kiko’s bumper. It’s a nifty detail that ties the hat to her suit and dress.

As always, I love HatQueen’s selection of new designs. We don’t see many cloches on royal heads, and these would be so lovely for the younger princesses.

I’m afraid I don’t get the royal Halloween pictures, but then I’m pretty oblivious to pop culture!

Finally, while Jimbo has already reviewed Our Rainbow Queen, by Sali Hughes, I though I’d chime in, too. (It was a happy surprise to have this book appear at our public library.) As he said, it’s small and features a lot of familiar images. But there are some lesser-know creations, and the organization by color is fun. Also, there are some tidbits and observations about color choices — a preference for yellow at Commonwealth events, avoidance of green at grassy venues, and a reported quote that she couldn’t wear beige “…because nobody would know who I am.” — that keep it lively.

  2. I quite like Inkhosikati LaMashwama’s percher. It’s a lovely, vibrant color on her, and I hope this is the beginning of many more hat-wearing opportunities for her. She’s a lovely addition to our Hat Watch 🙂

Lovely headpiece on Princess Gabriella! Wouldn’t it be wonderful if she was the very first Royal who was a milliner?

I really, really like Princess Make’s peachy/pink hat. The flourish on the side is very elegant, and the color on wonderful on her. It might be one of my favorite hats this year.

Mette-Marit and Haakon’s Halloween outfits are amazing! ha ha ha

Stunningly beautiful kimonos on the Imperial ladies on Oct 31.

    Hat Designs:

    – I love the red fedora by Rachel Trevor Morgan. I would love to see the Duchess of Sussex in that color.
    – I love the blue cloche by Mei Mei France Chapeaux. That blue would be stunning on so many Royal Ladies, but I think Princess Sofia of Sweden would look amazing in this.
    – Queen Maxima would look great in the fuchsia silk abaca bandeau by Jane Stoddart.
    – Great trilby and color by Philip Treacy. Prince Nikolai of Denmark, or Arthur Chatto
    – The Duchess of Cambridge would love that cream button percher by Louise MacDonald. The veil detail on it is divine.
    – I can see Queen Mathilde in the bright orange straw button percher with magenta lace applique flowers by Lisa Hughes.
    – I would love to see CP Mette-Marit in the pale aqua cloche with knotted sparkle hatband by Clotilde Toussaint.
    – I love the vibrant magenta straw wide brimmed hat by Allport Millinery. The Countess of Wessex would look great in this for Royal Ascot.
    – Lady Louise would look lovely in the Jolanta Katabova brimless designs covered in felt flowers.

    • I like the idea of a royal becoming a royal milliner, Shanon! I’m also with you on Mako’s pink — great color for her, and that loose ruffle is just the right embellishment.

I thought of the Duchess of Sussex for the RTM red fedora, too. The orange and magenta Lisa Hughes made me think of our recent discussion of HM’s most unusual color combinations, but you have the right idea about Mathilde. What about the Jolanta Katabova for Serena Lindley?
