Fête Nationale Monégasque 2019: Extended Grimaldi Family

National Day each year in Monaco brings the Grimaldi family together to celebrate their country and yesterday’s celebration saw a number of lovely hats worn by extended family members

Princess Caroline topped her pale blue coat with a black and copper floral silk jacquard printed bandeau trimmed with a large swath of black veil. There’s not much to say here- it’s a headband with a veil pouf. High fashion, perhaps, but not terribly exciting.

Tatiana Casiraghi wore a hat described by the milliner as a “slate velour felt downbrim with leather band and bow.” It has beautiful proportions and the layered leather cord as hatband is a subtle but interesting touch. It’s a great hat on Tatiana, a first of what I hope will be many more Rachel Trevor Morgan designs.

Little India Casiraghi first appeared in a grey wool bonnet that matched her coat, removing both pieces to watch the parade from the Palace Balcony in a floral dress and matching ruffled hatband.

Beatrice Borromeo Casiraghi wore a simple black felt formed beret trimmed with an overlay of black veil (vintage veiling, perhaps?). Beatrice seems to favour smaller scale, classic shapes such as this and she wears it very well.

Marie Chevallier Ducruet made her debut at this event, the first since marrying Princess Stephanie’s son Louis. She topped her blue coat dress with a smooth ecru felt halo headpiece. I’m not keen on the proportions of this piece, which make it look more like a pillbox from many angles, and wonder if tapered sides, more like those of a bandeau shape, might have worked better. The photo on the right, below, also suggests the piece is overly large for Marie and I wonder if the ruffled coat might have been shown to greater effect with a saucier trimmed percher hat?

  1. The coat of Tatiana is just awful on her. Her hat is good, but a bit old for someone her age. What an totally unflattering outfit Princess Caroline wears! Probably the colour of the coat makes her look very old?! Beatrice wears a stunning outfit (but the coat just a bit on the long side). The outfit of Marie…is just….messy?! A good stylist could do wonders for the (greatest part) of the family!

  2. Even if I’m not always a fan of what Caroline wears, she never looks as frumpy as this whole ensemble feels to me. An oversized and unstructured duster coat paired with simple headband sporting messy netting. Disappointing.

Tatiana looked fabulous in this portrait hat from RTM. I wish her white coat wasn’t so long, but that’s a minor complaint.

I love Beatrice’s green patterned coat and the beret, but I wonder if something brimmed would’ve balanced things out more shape-wise since the hat is so small and her outfit is more oversized.

I thought this was a good first attempt by Marie, and I also thought it was a large pillbox at first. Needless to say I was disappointed it wasn’t, and I wonder if a pillbox would’ve stayed on her head better? I do love the color scheme of her whole ensemble.

I kinda thought Alexandra might try out some sort of headpiece this year (we have a cocktail hat where I work that would go amazingly well with her outfit). Finally, cousin Melanie de Massy (incorrectly identified) was also in attendance in a (repeat?) hat on the balcony:

  3. not one hat resembles the others, the styles all differ , there is however a color scheme: black and white
I like that Marie wore a hat instead of a headband, it this her first hat appearance?
with every newby on the royal scene I anticipate the next hat

  4. I liked Beatrice’s and Tatiana’s hats very much. Marie’s not so much. But I will give Marie grace since this is her first time. I sure am curious what Pierre and Alexandra were talking about. They seemed to be having fun and that is almost always a good thing!

  5. Beatrice was my favorite! Basically, she can do no wrong in my book (ha ha). I think she’s so chic and fashion forward, but elegant. Great hat and great coat. The photos of her with her young son are just too sweet.

Tatiana’s hat is great. Looks fabulous on her and the slate color is wonderful. I see the sun popping up in the photos, so the felt hat looks odd and heavy to me, but then I shake my head and remember it’s November in France. So, chilly, yet sunny, so the hat is perfect. India’s bonnet is really too adorable for words.

I think Marie is such a beauty, that a smaller hat would work so nicely on her. Something like what Beatrice wore. The white one she has does look so big, but I give her kudos for wearing a hat (probably first time ever), and enjoying the festivities. I can’t wait to see her at family functions (wearing hats) in the future!

    • Shanon, I second everything you say.
Caroline’s veiling reminds me of the barbed wire emplacements set up on the beaches of Sydney during WWII, to repel a Japanese invasion. I can’t guarantee that the Princess’s veiling might not also repel loved ones at close quarters. Very sensibly, she did have it pushed back off her face back while cuddling the littlies during the balcony appearance.

  6. Princess Caroline looks lovely, but too much netting for my liking. Beatrice on the other hand, I love her beret, she looks so chic. Not a fan of the halo headpieces worn by Marie, looks an awkward fit.
