63 years to this day in 1956 when Queen Elizabeth visited the newly restored Queen Victoria Room and State Apartments at Kensington Palace and an exhibition at the London Museum in a ruched velvet brimless hat with button trim.

And here’s the video of the visit to Calder Hall https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNRz1FbXEek, confirming Jimbo’s discovery that the outfit is definitely black and white.
Since I’m in the Christmas Spirit after the Macy’s Day Thanksgiving Day Parade here in the USA I immediately wondered if HM was in red and white! Ha! Black and white is much better! I like the second hat that Jimbo has found below best. It’s size doesn’t overwhelm you with velvet.
I thought the same thing about red and white, but then I thought that was too “santa-ish.” I then hoped for emerald green, which would be divine, but the color photo Jimbo brilliantly found looks more navy to me, which is so lovely. Regardless, the hat HQ shows is lovely with the ruching, and it’s fabulous that there were 2 more hats to match it. What a fun find!
The color photo in the article below shows that the hat and coat are black and white.

Same coat, two dfferent hats:

Brilliant finds, as always, Jimbo! Three hats for this coat- that’s certainly unusual.
I think I prefer the feather hat with this coat the most. This is anticipation of your next “This or That” posting on this amazing coat Jimbo! 🙂 ha ha
Nice finds, Jimbo. That ermine-tails hat is like nothing I’ve ever seen. Amazing.
These old photos are always unreliable, but this looks like a navy and white ensemble to me. She is also wearing a sapphire with a pearl drop brooch and she does love to match her sapphires with blue clothes.
Wow, the Queen looks beautiful in this b/white photo. Love the velvet hat and dress, lovely.
