I was so inspired yesterday by the beautiful rainbow hats designed and donated for the Royal Ascot Charity Auction, this week’s discussion just had to be, dearest readers: which royal hat (or royal hat and clothing combination) is most colourful? Each hat or hatted ensemble you post MUST have at least 4 distinct colours!
Bring on the rainbows!

Had to include Grand Duchess Stephanie’s hat with the silk flower. Colorful and beautiful! Also, I remember Zara Phillips wearing a colorful outfit to Ascot but I can’t find it.

Funny… one of the Ascot hat retrospectives I’ve prepared for “Ascot At Home” next week is for Zara Tindall so her Ascot hats are fresh in my memory! I quickly looked through them all again and I think, Jules, you might be referring to this one with a bright blue and yellow Rosie Olivia teardrop percher.

wow – surprised that i dont ever remember seeing this!?!?! i think i quite like it! nice hat!

Such happy, colourful royal hat looks here! I can’t help but smile as I scroll through all this colour.
I have one more to add, worn by Princess Annette for her civil wedding to Prince Berhard on July 6, 2000. Photos by Marcel Antonisse/APF.

What an unusual hat to wear to a wedding ceremony. I happen to love color, so this is lovely. Her bouquet is so pretty.
It took me a while to find it but I always thought this dress and hat Princess Eugenie wore to Ascot was great on her.

and then a plain hat with a busy skirt

she can certainly pull off those bright looks
I think my favourite of Maxima’s colourful looks is this one- her dress was designed by Luna, a ten year old Dutch girl named Luna fighting leukemia. The Make-A-Wish foundation linked Luna with Natan designer Edouard Vermeulen, who created her design. It’s such a special story.

I love this story, although this is not the hat I would have picked!
The shape of this one is awkward, isn’t it?! Her bright pink straw ‘slice’ hat would have been a better pairing, I think.
I imagine there’s a pic somewhere you can see it better, but there’s an orange splodge on Bea’s skirt that makes this one bright ensemble along with the blue, mint and Black. Embed from Getty Images
On vacation so internet is bad and I could get a picture to upload on here but the first one that come to mind was the butterfly hat Princess Beatrice wore to I believe Peter and Autumn’s wedding.
Jimbo posted the multicolored hat from Guards Polo that was the first to pop into MrFitzroy’s head… This one was a close second. While the coat and hat of the ensemble are monotone pink, the centers of those rose blooms are just packed with colors, appearing even more intense than the dress print!

Opps…the third image in slideshow was miss selected, Sometimes those tiny slideshow thumbnails are difficult to discern!
Here’s one that was also a contender for “Largest Hat”: Embed from Getty Images
Wow, great find mittenmary! I’ve never seen this hat. This has 6 colors on it!
I think I’m enjoying this theme more than is good for me!
Of course, not to be left out is our fabulous Máx!

Only Max could hold her own in this setting. Love
Good one, JamesB! I think of Máx as the most colorful queen.
Good one! She has a few more…

In the category of neutral hat with colorful ensemble: Embed from Getty Images
I just had to post this one from Mathilde

This post is so much fun! He is another colourful look for Princess Eugnie. Sorry but I can’t remember who designed the hat.

And who can forget this old friend! I think she though a neutral hat would calm the outfot down a bit. Hmmm…. Embed from Getty Images

I unfortunately cannot find my favorite photo of that hat, where there is a woman in the background pointing, but unintentionally she’s pointing straight to HM’s hat!
Here’s one of Empress Michiko’s most colorful hats (sorry, can’t embed it): https://www.gettyimages.com/detail/news-photo/emperor-akihito-and-empress-michiko-attend-the-japan-canada-news-photo/484851692.
While the hat is monochrome, this is one of Margrethe’s more colorful outfits!

Again, another monochrome hat, but Diana manages to fit in the rules with her dress:

Here’s Margrethe’s look in it’s colourful splendor. This is my favourite royal rain coat of all time!
Embed from Getty Images
Although this one, also in Margrethe’s closet, is a close second
I thought of this one as soon as I saw the post. I think it might well be my favourite raincoat on anyone ever, royal or otherwise (though alas, it would look ghastly on me).
Still, let’s hope Queen Margrethe starts a worldwide trend for bright cheerful raincoats with pockets, and, of course, matching hats!

I was waiting for both of these to come up! Here are additional views of Eugenie’s colour splattered coat. I adore this ensemble on her.

Good one! And again- you triggered my memory of another hat worn on the 2014 Canadian visit.

There’s this one from the very colourful Caribbean tour of 2009… red, green and white in the hat. Then chuck in yellow and blue in the dress. It’s erm, not one of my favourites! Embed from Getty Images
I cannot find a pic anywhere, but the winner of biggest bow (you know the one, a stack of multi coloured bows with a paisley suit) surely has to be included here!!
This is the one I can’t find on Getty. It’s a lot! Already won biggest bow! http://hermajestyscloset.blogspot.com/2015/04/paisley-turquoise-skit-suit.html?m=1
Here it is. Photo from Reuters.

Great catch. Your post triggered my memory about another colourful hat on that 2009 Caribbean trip…

I was looking for that one too! It was a colourful trip!

thanks jimbo – i knew you’d find the colour pic. cheers!
Lady Helen really leaning into colour blocking here. Because she has kept the colour tones similar, with those bold shades using white to anchor it, I think this works so, so well. Embed from Getty Images
One of my favorite Lady Helen ensembles! I really miss her on the scene!
I have always love that outfit of Lady Helen’s.
Lady Helen’s colour blocked ensemble is such a memorable royal Ascot look! She also wore a colourful ensemble for Trooping the Colour two years ago with a Stephen Jones hat. Her cousin, Zenouska Mowatt in a Jane Taylor hat, wasn’t a wallflower, either!

I thought immediately of this one!
It may not be the most colours, but this is certainly a lot for Anne. And might I say, looking rather fabulous too!
Embed from Getty Images
I really should have read the rules… this is only 3 colours! Sorry…
either way, love this outfit on anne – think its one of her most stylish EVER. she does have some recent similar smart suiting which i wish we would see more of…
It’s all good! This reminded me of another Ascot outfit for Anne, in 2015. If you cound the silver sparkles on the coat, it’s 4 colours….
Embed from Getty Images
Phew! To be fair three colours for Anne is the equivalent of 4 for anyone else!!
Absolutely!
And if we’re talking colourful ensembles for Princess Anne… we can’t leave out this one! June 1986 in Canada
