Japanese court dress doesn’t seem to change, but this definitely has a ’90s look.
I was gonna say, except for the 1980s/early 90s wide shoulders and sleeves, this would fit right in at any Japanese Imperial Court function requiring such an outfit. I would like to see Masako with her hair down again sometime.

A delicate summery brimmed hat plus the baby pink plus the huge bow at the waist are indeed reminiscent of a bridesmaid, and are a step away from the usually sober imperial gown. The hat is a good choice with the dress, though I’d prefer an even wider brim. I do think the plainer imperial hat styles with smaller brims which we often see, would look too uninteresting, paired with that huge bow.
Shelby’s bridesmaids were like pink meringues!!
