British Royals Mark Armistice Day

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall attended a service at Westminster Abbey today marking  Armistice Day and the centenary of the burial of the unknown warrior.

For this event, Camilla she repeated her large black black felt hat with flyaway raised brim. The smooth lines of the hat are punctuated with a wide band of bias-woven ribbon binding the brim edge. It’s such a great hat for events such as these, its scale and sleek lines connoting a sense of solemn dignity.

Over in Stafford, The Earl and Countess of Wessex attended an outdoor commemoration at the National Memorial Arboretum.

The Countess repeated her navy felt pillbox wrapped in a swath of dotted veil. The classic shape pairs so well with Sophie’s wide collared coat and its militaristic styling, creating another overall look that feels very fitting for this event.

As I said on Sunday, hats are secondary at events like these but this pair is, again, outstanding.

  1. Wonderful to see Camilla back in the hat (one of my favorites for her) after more than a year and a half! I also like her poppy mask: health- and occasion-appropriate.

A great look for Sophie and it’s nice to see her choose some different hairstyles with her most recent outings. It is interesting she wore navy blue instead of black, but clearly it was deemed an appropriate color.

  2. The hats are perfect and both ladies look fabulous.
I was underwhelmed by Sophie’s pillbox on its first outing, as I didn’t feel her dress suited the hat; but on this occasion, looking at all the photos showing it from various angles, her styling seems to suit the hat in every respect – so much so that I can’t imagine any hat working better than this one. I love the improvements in this wearing — the veiling now pushed back, larger earrings, and hair in a ponytail. And the coat with its flattering cut, especially the neckline, plus the boots, bring out the silhouette of the hat perfectly. I now see this particular hat, so styled, as a potential signature look for Sophie.

  3. I was glad to see Camilla re-wear this hat again. It’s very sleek and looks great with her coat.
Sophie really is suited for pillbox hats and this one looks great and highly appropriate for the occasion.

  4. Both ladies are well dressed. The hats are good choices and well done. Again I have a question? Prince Edward has no military connection. Based on that I do not understand his uniform. Perhaps it is a nod of respect. I believe this uniform may be connected to the army. Thank you.

    • While not an active member of the armed forces, Prince Edward holds a number of honorary military appointments, in the UK and also in Canada (e.g. he’s Colonel-in-Chief of the Prince Edward Island Regiment). I don’t have the knowledge to decode what he’s wearing here, but I imagine it’s the uniform of one of his honorary appointments.

I think the Dss of Cornwall’s hat here is spot on, but the poppy-themed mask is perhaps a bit cheery for the occasion, despite the appropriateness of poppies generally.

    • Since August 1, 2004, Prince Edward has held the military position of Personal Aide-de-Camp to the Queen. He also holds several honorary military appointments in the UK:

2003: Royal Honorary Colonel of the Royal Wessex Yeomanry
2006: Commodore-in-Chief of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary
2007: Royal Colonel of 2nd Battalion, The Rifles
2008: Honorary Air Commodore of Royal Air Force Waddington
2011: Royal Honorary Colonel of the London Regiment

  5. Love both of these pretty hats.

Looking back through the links to previous Camilla’s wearings of Camilla’s black hat, I am reminded of how much I loved this hat with the charcoal grey coat with black key embellishment. That was my favourite pairing .

Sophie’s navy hat with netting is delightful. I guess the coat is navy also? I can’t tell on my phone.
