Last week we entertained ourselves by choosing hats for British royal family members to wear on Christmas Day. This week, we’re opening up our royal hat dreams with new designs we’d like to add to a royal’s closet. Share a link to the hat (Twitter or Instagram hats will show up as photos here), name its milliner AND the royal you’re choosing it for and, most importantly, share your reasons for that choice. You can stick with established royal-milliner collaborations or suggest entirely new ones- anything goes!
This is my only post scheduled for this week- so let’s settle in and have some fun with it!

Noeleen Armstrong Kish
Countess of Wessex for both:
I love the silk floral boater!
Me, too! It’s the essence of spring — imagine it at a garden party!
More Noeleen Armstrong Kish:
Duchess of Cambridge
Zara Tindall:

Countess of Wessex:
More Noeleen Armstrong Kish:
This is larger than what she normally wears, but I think this would be lovely on HGD Stephanie:
I love the burst of yellow. This could be lots of fun for Queen Margrethe:
The yellow and navy is perfect for Queen Margrethe! Great call.
Noeleen Armstrong Kish has some lovely hats:
Princess Eugenie:
This blue would be so striking on the Duchess of Cambridge:
Jake also suggested several of Wies Mauduit’s hats for Princess Laurentien- all are great suggestions. I’d also like to see Wies’ hats on Queen Maxima, beginning with her leopard print felt fedora and gorgeous pink brimmed hat with rose. Imagine the second one with a pink gown for Prinjesdag? It would be perfection.
Both hats are great choices. I think that pink hat is one of the most beautiful hats ever. So timeless.
The pink one is one of my favourites of 2020.
I’m still waiting for someone to wear this gorgeous Jill Humphries creation:
This is totally a “Grace Kelly” look, so it would make sense that her granddaughter Charlotte Casiraghi should wear this:
A stunning hat! Tricky to wear because of the neck wrap, but Charlotte could carry it off. I can also imagine it on her sister-in-law, Beatrice Borromeo Casiraghi, and on CP Mary.
Empress Masako wore hats from Japanese brand Maxim years ago- I’d love her to go back for more!
I’d also like to see some of Maxim’s more modern styles/details and vibrant colours on Princess Mako and Princess Kako
I love the way that Queen Mathilde wears clothing and millinery. She can wear millinery that’s really flamboyant, but there’s such a restrained quality to her persona that the pieces never quite read as over-the-top. I’d love to see her in this almost acidic piece from Aiofe Harrison:
It would be especially great paired with an architectural outfit like this one from Natan which she so often wears:
https://natan.be/en/looks/fw20/look-18-fw20?p=10593
That first hat certainly would be wonderful on Masako.
Also, I definitely can envision the blue/white and oyster/grey-green hats on Hisako! Both are so beautiful and deserve some love on royal heads.
A big YES to some updated looks for the Japanese Imperial Family! The cloches would be charming for Mako and Kako.
I’d love to see Crown Princess Victoria embrace more hats, like Italian brand Origami Hats’ charming felt berets with bows.
Great choice, HQ! She rocks a military beret https://royalhats.net/2014/11/25/princess-victoria-supports-womens-voluntary-defense-service/ and I could really see her in this soft pink.
I’d also love to see Vivien Sheriff’s work on any of the British royal ladies. We’ve seen Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie in Sheriff hats- what about Zara? Or Lady Sarah? Or Lady Frederick?
French brand Rose Cherie Paris by Stella’s clean, classic lines would be a great pairing for Lady Sarah’s style.
That seafoam green color is gorgeous! What a perfect summer hat!
Gorgeous!
Lulu suggested edgier, fashion-forward looks for the Duchess of Cambridge. I’d like the same for Princess Beatrice, who can carry a strong look really well. I think Maria Monica London could be a good brand match for her, with a piece like this blue embroidered felt fedora
I agree, HatQueen, this one would look great on Beatrice — I love that stitching aligned with the hatband!
Me, too! The color is dreamy, and the stitching is such a standout detail.
I completely agree! Just beautiful!😍
Here’s another Maria Monica London design I think would be great on Beatrice
Carol Kennelly caught my eye this year with her exquisite headpieces.
Queen Letizia has worn designs that are similar to this. It gives height and has such a delicateness to it. I just think it’s a stunner. It would also work on the Duchess of Cambridge or CP Mary:
Princess Charlene would look great in this with a fabulous black or white pantsuit:
The scale of this works so well on Camilla, and I love the dots on it:
Queen Mathilde:
Duchess of Cambridge:
I’ve long been a fan of Carol Kennelly- I’d love to see some of her designs on royal heads!
Remember the British Hat Guild’s auction of rainbow-themed hats during Ascot: https://www.ascot.co.uk/millinery-auction? I’m imagining some event — maybe a royal tribute to the NHS when this is all over — where the British royals showcase these beauties in an explosion of joyful color. Maybe someone can help me with images since I don’t have an Instagram account, but how about the Lock and Company for Camilla, the Juliette Botterill for Kate, the Beverly Edmondson for Sophie, the Jess Collett for Zara, the Lisa Tan for Beatrice, and the Rachel Trevor Morgan for Eugenie? (I don’t think there’s anything here we can get HM to wear, so RTM will just have to create a design.)
And one more: Maxima gets the Bee Smith for an exuberant Koningsdag outing!
GREAT idea and picks mittenmary! Happy New Year – here’s your pic’s:
Camilla in Lock and Co.
Kate in Juliette Botterill
Sophie in Beverly Edmondson
Zara in Jess Collett
Beatrice in Lisa Tan
Eugenie in Rachel Trevor Morgan
Thank you SO MUCH, Shanon. Maybe setting up an Instagram account will be at the top of my list of resolutions. Happy New Year!
You should set up an account mittenmary. You can make it private, go under a pseudonym and follow all the great milliners! I started following cookie decorators before Christmas. That’s a fun rabbit hole! I never knew watching someone flood cookies could be so relaxing 😁
Cookie decorating — that does sound fun!
I think the Countess of Wessex would look stunning in this hat from Millinery Jill:
I could see it paired with this fantastic dress by Susannah:
https://www.suzannah.com/products/blythe-midi-metallic-navy-tweed
What a stunner — a little different, but not too far off from her usual style. And the dress looks perfect for her
WOW! Fantastic choice of hat and outfit PHOneill!!!
Jill Humphries is one of my absolute favorites. This design is also by her and I think it would look great on HGD Stephanie
I could imagine the Countess of Wessex wearing this hat from Millinery Jill with a dress like this one from Susannah. I’m mostly drawn to color, but I’m always extra impressed when a neutral design catches my eye like this one.
Blythe Midi Metallic Navy Tweed dress:
https://www.suzannah.com/products/blythe-midi-metallic-navy-tweed
I’m seeing this Mirjam van der Welle design for King Willem Alexander.
That is a seriously gorgeous hat. I love the peek of orange in the feather for the King of Orange-Nassau.
I didn’t even notice that! I was seduced by the ombre felt of the hat. But the feathers make it even more perfect for King Willem Alexander! Great catch!
I would like to see more Dillon Wallwork designs on royal heads (beyond the Countess of Mountbatten). This particular one would suit Camilla well as it is similar to the shapes (and the unfortunate lack of color for spring/summer haha) she prefers:
While not featured on his Instagram, there is a beautiful violet portrait hat on Wallwork’s website that I would love to see Camilla wear: http://www.dillonwallwork.co.uk/portfolio.html
It’s a rare treat to see royal men don hats, but I think this particular fedora from Hornskov København would look great on King Carl XVI Gustaf. He often favors dark-colored felt fedoras, so seeing this lighter brown one on him would be a nice switch without straying too far from the conservative color schemes he prefers:
I love Dillon Wallwork as a milliner match for Camilla. His hats are exquisite, beautifully made and might coax Camilla toward some slightly different shapes. Most importantly, the brand is British- I don’t think we’d ever see Camilla choose millinery from a milliner outside the UK.
Agree!
The Wallwork hat has Camilla’s name written all over it!
The subtle blend of neutrals on this beautiful hat is right up her alley, but I agree that the violet would be gorgeous for Camilla.
Great choices Jake!
I’ve been thinking more about your suggestion of Dillon Wallwork for British royals- I’d love to see his work on the Countess of Wessex:
Also the Duchess of Gloucester:
and Princess Alexandra:
And great call, Jake on a Hornskov København hat for King Carl Gustaf. I’d love to see Crown Prince Frederik support the brand, too.
I love the Australian milliners and I think Millinery by Mel would look great on the many Royal heads.
This green and black hat would look perfect on Princess Eugenie:
Princess Beatrice:
Princess Beatrice:
Duchess of Cornwall would look great in this color:
Shannon, you’ve outdone yourself! Love the purple and orange swirl for Bea! And yes, that would be a great color — and shape — for Camilla.
Countess of Wessex:
I can see Beatrice in this. She has a beautiful way of picking cute hats
Princess Anne:
Autumn Phillips:
I think this unique design would look great on Zara Tindall:
Princess Haya:
This hat and entire outfit would be glorious on Queen Maxima:
Amazing choices! I love them all, but especially the choices for the Countess of Wessex probably because I would like to wear those hats, too!
The emerald could work for Meghan as well as Autumn! Love the drama of your choice for Haya!
Thanks! You know I love Princess Haya and she wears those dramatic hats so well. I would also love to see that black hat in red for her, or the black hat with a fabulous red outfit.
Thank you HatQueen for this opportunity! Some thrilling style choices here and beautifully matched to their (potential) royal hat-wearers!
I already suggested this when HQ featured this hat in September, but here it is again. The color would be lovely for Princess Beatrice, and I think she’d appreciate the sassy style and the play on her name.
LOVE this choice so much mittenmary!
ADORE this for Bea!
MittenMary- I think Mind Your Bonce (made by British milliner Karen Geraghty) would be a great brand for Princess Beatrice
I’d love to see Zara Tindall in this piece by Awon Golding for Lock Couture. Zara looks fantastic in those sculptural perchers, so it would be fun to see how she carries this piece.
I LOVE a wider brim for Zara! I also love Awon Golding’s designs for her. Great call!
I second that great call. I love Awon Goldings designs for Zara.
I’d love to see Camilla in something like this. It, oddly enough, looks like it’s swallowing the head of the model, but I think it would look so striking with Camilla’s hair. The sweep of the brim and the fact that it’s asymmetrical is typical for her, but in my memory this is not a color we see her in very often.
Fantastic! The colour would be wonderful on Camilla, as would the sleek lines. She doesn’t have anything like this- great choice!
Agree!
The color and the scale of this hat would be perfect!
Sorry

I seem to be on a fedora/trilby kick- I’d like to add this Amelie D’Hooghvorst trilby to Hereditary Grand Duchess Stephanie’s closet. I think the colour along with the classic lines and sharp styling (love the striped hatband!) would be great for her.
The fedoras are so attractive on anyone. I love this Jill Humphries for Princess Benedikte:
I’ve really liked Princess Anne’s new hats from Amy Morris-Adams. Anne’s millinery wardrobe isn’t exactly vibrant and I’d love to see her pick up a few brightly coloured fedoras to liven up her outfits- she’s certainly overdue for a new red hat!
I also like this Sally Ann Provan for Princess Anne. The color is a favorite of hers, and the hatband makes it very modern.
That peacock color is so beautiful! It’s such a great choice for Princess Anne.
I might have suggested this color for Autumn Phillips, but yes, on Princess Anne as well. Great choice, Shanon!
Agree with you Matthew for Autumn Phillips. Or Zara. It’s such a fabulous hat.
This has been one of my favorite hats since Hat Queen featured it:
by Miguel Marzo y Jesús Díaz. I would like to see this on the Countess of Wessex as she looks so stunning in the large picture hats.
With a purple and lilac outfit? How soon until Ladies’ Day at Ascot?? Great suggestion Shanon!
Sophie can certainly carry a statement hat. I’d love to see her wear some of British milliner Tracey Miller’s designs. Her statement perchers have beautiful detail that I think would suit Sophie.
On second thought- we’ve seen looks similar to these already on Sophie. What about these perchers for Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice?
Ooh yes. Red on Princess Eugenie is stunning and the pale lilac would be a great foil for Princess Beatrice and her complexion and hair..would love to see her in this hat with an updo.
I love the Duchess of Cambridge’s hat choices but would love to see her go a little riskier. I think she would look lovely and sophisticated in this hat.

Very interesting pick for Kate! I wonder if the shape might be difficult to wear (what to do with her hair?) but like the direction you’re going. How about a cheetah print trilby with extended, slightly angular brim? The patent leather hatband gives it a bit of edge.
https://racheltrevormorgan.com/shop/leopard-print-fedora-with-patent-band/
I’ve loved Bettina Thomas’ designs on Queen Maxima. Here are a few more of her creations I think would be great on the Dutch queen.
Since I recently made such a suggestion in a comment on this post, I guess I will get this started haha.
I think this beret cocktail hat by our own Wies would be fantastic on Princess Laurentien for Prinsjesdag 2021:
Laurentien would be stunning in burgundy (imagine some champagne/gold lace overlay, either around her midsection or fanning out from the collar, on a solid burgundy dress to tie in with the button!), and this hat style suits her so well.
Good one! I think there are a lot of Wies’ designs that would be perfect for Laurentien, Jake!
Love this choice and how you’ve styled it, Jake.
