While chatting with the Royal Life Saving Society, Queen Elizabeth recalled passing life saving training 80 years ago!
New portraits of Queen Máxima were released in lead up to her 50th birthday tomorrow, all taken by King Willem-Alexander. And yes- we’re going to celebrate her birthday tomorrow with a look at some of her millinery whoppers!
Prince Harry’s guest appearance on a popular American podcast to talk about mental health is well worth a listen (be warned of sensitive/triggering material and some coarse language).

The Harris Tweed hat is described by the milliner as a Duchess hat.
HQ, is this a style of hat or the individual milliner’s name for an in-house style? At first glance, I thought this was a trilby but then I noticed a button or brim peaking out from below.
Crown Prince Haakon reminds me to ask who else has been keeping up with “Atlantic Crossing” on PBS in the US? (not certain of its availability elsewhere) Lots of good hats, even if the historical accuracy has (of course) been sacrificed a bit more for the drama as the show has continued haha.
Hi Jake, I watch Atlantic Crossing. I brought that up a few weeks ago on a CP Martha photo Hat Queen featured. It’s a good show, isn’t it?Her hats are amazing. The actress answered some questions on Masterpiece’s Instagram last week. She’s very thoughtful with her answers.
Hey Shanon, sorry, I didn’t mean to imply that no one had talked about the show before; I mentioned it more as a check-in to see if people were still watching/enjoying it. In fact, I have you and everyone else on that post to thank for introducing me to it! I’ve learned a lot from watching it and then researching the true story behind everything. And fun to watch the hats show up and see if/how they are based on real historical hats.
No apology necessary. Glad you are enjoying it. I haven’t watched last night’s episode yet, but will catch up tonight. Like you, I research the story as well (same while watching The Crown). I do wish there was more on CP Martha as she sounds so interesting (along with her sister Queen Astrid of The Belgians).
And thank you Matthew for mentioning the actress’s name is Sofia Helin. She’s lovely. I think that’s wonderful she also learned Norwegian for the role. I don’t listen to many podcasts, but I will certainly check Masterpiece’s out. Thank you for that recommendation!
Thank you for sharing the information regarding the show. It was a well done show and the fashions were beautiful!
Sofia Helin (the actress) was also interviewed at length on the Masterpiece Studio podcast on April 11. I love the fact that like the real Martha, she is Swedish by birth and learned Norwegian especially to perform this role!
Great selection of hats this week, HQ – the incorporation of the Kasmiri embroidery is wonderfully done and so original, and also another beautiful one from Wies.
We’re still watching, too! It’s a compelling story, even if not historically accurate (from what I’ve seen). I did not know that the actress had to learn Swedish for the role — very impressive. It’s interesting to hear about the war from the Norwegian perspective.
Nice to see Prince Haaken out honoring the liberation of Norway.
Beautiful pictures of Queen Maxima!
– Terrific green hued turban from Art of Hats Studio. This would look fabulous on Queen Maxima.
– I absolutely love the orange leather beret percher with felt ruffle and red quills by Australian milliner Melanie Atherinos. This color would look fabulous on our Queen of Orange, Queen Maxima! I think this would also be fabulous on Zara Tindall.
– The Duchess of Cambridge would look great in the berry hues on this woven straw fedora by British milliner Tracey Miller
– I would love to see The Duchess of Cambridge at Braemar Games in the Harris tweed hat appliquéd with vintage Kashmiri hand embroidery from British milliner Sara Colacicco.
– Impressive cabaret-inspired crystal-trimmed design with ombre staircase by London-based brand Hats by Nara. This would be a fabulous Ascot hat. Maybe on The Countess of Wessex?
– I would love to see Lady Louise in the pink velvet bandeau with Tudor-style lattice veil and pearls by Australian milliner Wendy Diggles
– Princess Haya would look incredible in the dramatic goth statement from British milliner Edwina Ibbotsen with a wide brimmed black hat edged in giant rolled roses. That is a spectacular hat!!!!
– CP Mary would look great in the plum velvet teardrop percher with beautiful silk flowers by Russian milliner Anna Andrienko.
– I love Wies’ newsboy cap! The colors are fantastic and the design is pure fun! How fun would this be on one of the Dutch Princesses? I could see this on Princess Alexia with her gorgeous auburn hair.
I have one more to add. This red fedora beauty by Christine Waring. It would be fabulous on Queen Maxima.
Shanon, your picks are always spot on! I especially like the pink velvet bandeau for Lady Louise, the black picture hat for Haya, and the orange-gold newsboy with stunning origami ribbon for Alexia!
Thank you for featuring my “Colonel” cap, Hat Queen! Happy to find myself in the company of so many beautiful hats in your weekly pick!
(And speaking as a Dutch citizen, orange seemed the right colour for this week. Looking forward to your selection of hats from Queen Máxima’s closet!)
