Queen Máxima Opens Kahlo Exhibit

On Thursday, Queen Máxima opened the exhibition “Viva La Frida and art of Mexican Artist Frida Kahlo” in the Drents Museum in Assen, Netherlands.

For this occasion, she wore a headpiece of vibrant silk flowers.

Unquestionably, the headpiece is a nod to the Mexican artist and on this merit alone, it’s a fantastic choice. On its own, the headpiece is a lovely piece that not only frames Máxima’s face in the loveliest way, but that looks wonderful from all sides (maybe even better from the back than from the front!). The overall ensemble is styled so well, the headpiece balancing the patterned skirt and grounded by the magenta blouse (and bright earrings!) to make an overall look that is so alive and beautiful on the Dutch queen.

What do you think of this headpiece on Queen Máxima, particularly for this event?

  1. When I first saw this, before I got the connection to the event I have to say my first reaction was ‘eh?!’ But then it all made sense and I think this was a masterstroke. It’s very Máx, very Frida, very bonkers, but very flattering and loads of fun.

    • Yes, I think you’ve hit the nail on the head, JamesB — all of the royals dress to look fabulous at public events, but Máxima also dresses to have fun!

  2. Máxima, more than any other royal, has a reputation for matching her outfits both in style and color to the event she is attending, and this is no exception — absolute perfection!

  3. A wonderful look altogether! I like QM in these shades as well. Much more lively than some of the browns, tans, and earth tones of which she is so fond. The balance of the whole outfit is very good too.

  4. This is a fantastic and fun ensemble! It suits Máxima and the occasion perfectly, and IMO it’s fun to see a fascinator again after a dry spell with this hat style.

  5. I’m sorry but top to toe I can’t really find anything to like. I think she should have left the exuberance to Frida. Looking at the third photo in the first set I think the little girl also has her doubts and seems to be in agreement with me!

  6. My first impression was that the headpiece was a little top-heavy, but, nope, I’m over that. I love everything about this: it’s perfect for the event, the flowers echo those on the skirt beautifully, and the liveliness suits Max so well. Overall, it’s a better match than the hat she previously wore with this skirt. (Maybe we have a This or That coming soon?)

And the little girl in her Frida costume is adorable!

  7. I have to say, I don’t think I ever remember a more perfect hat-to-event match than this! It manages the nod to the artist while being fun and appropriate, and without being too literal in interpretation.
