This Week’s Extras

Queen Margrethe repeated her spotted grey sealskin bumper hat in Greenland this week
Many thanks to reader Molly, who shared this documentary (register to watch for free) on “The Hats of Jerusalem” hosted by the George Washington Museum’s textiles department.
On Tuesday, Princess Akiko of Mikasa attended the 19th National Self-Defense Forces Award Ceremony in a grey hat with mushroom brim and bow.

On Thursday, Princess Hisako opened a home exhibition in a hat with pale pistachio textured crown and jauntily upturned short brim. On Friday, she attended a photography exhibition in a charming beret design embellished with monochrome leaves

  1. Japan’s royals were busy last week. Princess Tsuguko wore a hat on October 9

    Also worn in 2013

  2. The green dress took my breath away! Look at those folds–not a crease on them! Absolute perfection, the whole outfit.

  3. Here’s a view of Margrethe’s hat with the bow on the side (she’s also wearing the same coat/skirt she wore a week or so ago with the new patterned trilby, a rare mix and match for her!):

Margrethe also wore a beanie/toque on a boat tour during her visit to Greenland:

It’s great to see Akiko again, especially in such a lovely hat! I have to admit I was slightly disappointed with Hisako’s rather sedate hat choices since I know she can pull off much bolder designs, but despite that I always enjoy her visible joy at virtually any event she attends; looks like her connections to Ireland are also still going strong too!

  4. That really is a great beret for Princess Hisako. I’m struck by the fact that it’s not the same color as her dress — unusual for the Japanese imperials! Her other hat is cute as well, and Princess Akiko looks great in her mushroom brim.

RTM’s Meissen-inspired piece really is a knockout. And Josemieke Crebolder would be great for one of the Dutch princesses, perhaps for an occasion like Koningsdag.

Thanks to Molly for the tip about what looks like a fascinating video.
