Princess Elizabeth attends Children’s Day at Aldershot Tattoo on May 31, 1938 in a wide brimmed straw hat with floral trim. She wore the same hat a year later on a visit to St. Catherine’s Docks with her grandmother, Queen Mary.

I like that the future queen is now old enough to get a more grown-up wider brim.
One wonders if the Princess was already getting inklings that she might become heiress presumptive? I don’t recall reading when HM was made aware that abdication might be an issue.
This countdown is a lovely way to honour and reminisce. Thank you, HQ.

Thanks HQ, Lilibet is growing up, isn’t she? I looked for a color photo, but in vain.
If it’s ok with you, I’ll continue looking for future hats in color also, while you’re posting b/w photos.
I wonder if Margaret got any hand-me-downs from her sister . . . um, I doubt it.
Another delightful hat for Princess Elizabeth. Just a little bit more grown up than the previous one. I love this wider brim. I wonder if Queen Mary ever imagined that her granddaughter would be Queen for over 70 years.
Great hat, but what really gets me is the continuity. One day we’ll be looking back at photos of George’s children with HM and tracing the thread, and photos like this just show how strong that is.
That is a significant part of her story, isn’t it? Continuity AND hats!
