The Queen’s 1947 visit to Africa was momentous for several reasons- it was the first state visit since 1939 and the outbreak of World War II and would be the last for Princess Elizabeth before announcing her engagement. She celebrated her 21st birthday in South Africa, broadcasting a coming-of-age speech that defined her commitment to a life of service. Another one of the memorable hats worn on the visit was this bright yellow design with curved brim trimmed in organza ruffles.

What a marvelous trip down memory lane — I’m really enjoying this series — thank you so much, HatQueen!
It has been fun to put together! There are SO MANY hats to choose from!
The style is dated, but I appreciate the optimistic color.
HQ, it’s extraordinary how you are mining the archives to come up with these treasures! Thank you so much!
An amazing hat and outfit. Many of the hats on the 2nd news reel are new to me and so unique. Thank you Hat Queen.
Another one that needed an edit, she was still in the phase of copying her Mother’s style too much; which changed in the next few years.
The pattern of the yellow dress is fab though, that would work if worn today!
a great find, can’t recall seeing this one
