King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima visited the Dune and Bulb region in northern South Holland on Thursday.
For this day of visits to tulip companies, football club FC Lisse, Noordwijk’s Space Campus and tourism developments in Katwijk, Queen Máxima repeated a large rounded pillbox hat covered in navy fabric.
The classic hat is such a great compliment to the beautiful lace trimmed dress, a piece you can see in better detail below or and at Josine Droogendijk’s wonderful blog on Máxima’s fashion. The sleek lines of the hat elevated the sophistication of the ensemble, its dark hue standing out so well amidst the many colourful tulips.

Royal Hats 
I’m in agreement with all who felt that this outfit would have been even more suitable for the welcome of the Indian President and First Lady than what Queen Máxima did actually wear. This whole look is lovely, and also I do like the pillbox better with this hair style than with the one in 2013.
One additional comment to lesleyc19’s mention of the 4″ stilettos is that not only did it seem odd that she would wear them on a visit where she had to walk into a field, but I thought she could have toned down the height a bit also when she met the Indian couple, as she is already tall and it made her tower over them even more than was necessary. The Duchess of Cambridge and Crown Princess Mary are two other royal women who always wear very high heels even when practicality or appropriateness might dictate lower ones. Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine!
This is a lovely outfit.
I wonder if the State Visit outfit was a last minute change due to weather. Sevita Kovind is shown sheltering under an umbrella, and, frankly, everyone looks cold.
That’s a good hypothesis. It might also explain the wide brimmed hat- better rain protection than anything brimless!
This is an elegant outfit and the hat tops it off very successfully. Like others, I feel it would have been more suitable for the Indian state visit than the outfit Maxima actually wore! I wonder if she deliberately chose a hat with no brim on what was obviously a windy day.
This is the wrong thread so apologies for commenting but does anyone know who designed Zara’s hat yesterday? It was so lovely seeing her wear a larger type of hat and it paired so well with the trousers.
I think Queen Maxima looks lovely. This navy pillbox looks very chic with the navy coat and gorgeous dress. Quite a formal look for such a day out.
I’d love to know why this hat and outfit weren’t worn BBC when welcoming the Indian President and his wife to the Netherlands. I cannot get my head around this and someone tell me if you’re going to “tiptoe through the tulips” why would you wear 4” stilettos 👠
Love this whole look for Máxima; while it is simpler than some of her ensembles, it hits all the right notes and the white lace patterns on the dress keep it from being too monochrome. My only complaint is we didn’t see this for the Indian state visit.
P.S. Happy for the tulips blooming right now in DC! First it was cherry blossoms, now tulips, and looking forward to the lilies!
