Platinum Jubilee Countdown: 37

During visits to Tunisia in October 1980, Sri Lanka in October 1981 and Papa New Guinea in October 1982, Queen Elizabeth wore this lovely pale jade straw hat with dotted veil and spray of pink silk flowers around the back.

  1. Yes, I absolutely prefer it without the veil. The colour, style and flowers stand out well. The coat blowing in the breeze is rather lovely.

  2. Upon further research, a couple of interesting things to light:
    1. The 1st photo in the 2nd set is mislabeled by Getty; it’s not from the 1982 Papua New Guinea trip, but from the 1980 Tunisia trip. The huge honking brooch gives it away.
    2. HM’s hat was in fact reworked for the 1982 trip, with much of the veil removed. A good rear shot of the flowers has been included. Again, the brooch served as an aid.

    • I’ve often noticed that when HM repeats a dress or coat, she almost always wears different brooches each time, and I’ve often wondered if that was her conscious decision or her dresser’s, to make it easier to identify the photos. Princess Diana often did a similar thing, in her case by changing her earrings.

  3. I’ll join the approval for the hat, it’s lovely, and the softness of it is very flattering on her. Would probably remove the pink flowers though, they’re a bit of an afterthought.
I like the silhouette of the dress but find the pattern a bit busy, I don’t think it photographs brilliantly, a slightly more distinct print would have been better.

  4. What a difference today’s ensemble is from yesterday’s! So frothy and airy compared to the buttoned up nautical outfit.
Back in minority corner again – I think the trim on the hat is literally gilding the lily! Too much veil, competing with the beautiful dress, although the pink flowers add a nice touch. And yes, I immediately thought of QEQM and her breezy styling.

  5. I like everything about this hat, outfit and jewels. Maybe the hat trim could have been a little more voluminous but it fits well with the dress print so no matter really.

  6. This is a lovely change from the hats we’ve been looking at recently for Queen Elizabeth.

I much prefer it worn with the brim dipping over the forehead slightly in some of the photos. But I appreciate the Queen needs to be seen. It’s a beautiful colour. The dotted veil and pink flowers picking up the softness of the pretty dress and chiffony coat.

Very much a Queen Mother look but I love it nonetheless.
