Ascot 2023 Day 2: The King and Queen

King Charles and Queen Camilla led the royal procession again on the second day of racing at Ascot Racecourse.

King Charles repeated his black antique silk top hat.

Queen Camilla repeated her almond straw picture hat with an off-centre, peaked crown and wide, sidesweeping brim. The hat is trimmed in six overlapping folded jinsin straw ribbons that wrap around the crown in a fanning hatband with tails that extend over the brim. The same stacked jinsin ribbons twist into an origami-esque knotted embellishment on the side.

The trim on this design really is exquisite. However, it was another neutral hat for Camilla and when I saw it, my first thought was to hope she had some more colourful new hats to debut later this week.

  1. This photo helps sum up my reaction to Camilla’s hat for Day 2:

It’s a fine hat and nice to see her dig farther back in the hatboxes, but again, this doesn’t feel extravagant enough for Ascot, and like Bristol I don’t think the color of the hat pairs extremely well with the outfit. I am glad to see these jewels again, however!

  2. A signature look carried out well, as we’ve come to expect. I love the details on the hat, but I would never choose that almond colour to go with pale pink. The two shades just don’t complement each other, I feel, with the pink making the hat colour look a bit dingy. A proper white would have gone better, or another pale pastel shade (green, blue, even yellow).

    • I wanted her to swap with Sophie and wear her pink and white hat! The hat is lovely and the almond does sort of go with her hair and creamy pearls, but pink would have been better!

  3. A beautiful hat for The Queen Consort on Day 2. The details are so unique. An interesting colour pairing with pale pink and the amazing jewellery.

  4. The pale colors, with an occasional pop of navy, are her signature.
Camilla does not need to change anything. She wears her hats and outfits, vs them wearing her. Was happy to see her looking happy and relaxed this week.
