Danish State Visit to Norway

On May 14, the new Danish king and queen made their vist state visit to Norway.

For their arrival, Queen Mary repeated a grey silk orchid flower headpiece with feathers and birdcage veil.

The headpiece is impeccably styled with the ensemble (as usual!) and provides great balance between the patterned skirt and sleek jacket. It’s the first time we’ve seen this piece at close view and I’m a little disappointed at the flower’s construction- it lacks detail and finesse.

Queen Sonja repeated an ecru straw brimmed hat, trimmed with a wide hatband that folds into a trio of bow tails at the back. The streamlined hat pairs well with the embellished coat.

The millinery surprise of the day was Crown Princess Mette-Marit, who wore an ivory sinamay hat with wide cartwheel brim. The desgin features an oval brim extension in bias ivory windowpane sinamay, a swath of tulle and a large knotted flying sinamay bow.

It’s a great design for Mette-Marit, the oval brim giving some quirky interest and the veil and bow provding great counterpoint to the more severe lines of her collared dress. It’s great to see her in a brimmed hat and in a design by a milliner she has not worn before.

On May 15, Queen Mary, repeated a casual fedora in poly braid with extended brim, trimmed with a navy and ecru striped hatband. These type of casual, sun protection hats are so accessibly wearable, it’s nice to see one on a royal head!

  1. So good to see Mette Marit in a wide brim, it suits her so well, it’s a great hat and an elegant pairing with the graphic dress.

everyone else looks lovely, especially Astrid. Love how the Scandis mix and match their wardrobes so successfully, pieces a decade old can look fresh and new with good styling.

  2. Usually I find the state visits to Norway lackluster when it comes to hats, but not this time! I thought everyone looked fantastic, even if a few details here and there could be improved.

I do agree the floral detailing on Mary’s fascinator seem a bit sparse, but overall the color coordination was great, the fascinator was styled better than its premiere 11 years ago, and it’s been well-maintained despite it’s age. Her casual straw braid fedora was a great choice with her outfit and suited the more casual sunny situation perfectly.

The perfect outfit for Sonja to pair with this hat; the bright scarlet and lace details are wonderful and play off the simplicity of this hat, which looks to be made of parabuntal, meaning it’s of high quality straw and has held up well considering it’s officially a teenager hehe.

I’m not completely sold on the asymmetry of the brim or how the trim was laid out on this hat for Mette-Marit, but that doesn’t mean I don’t like it, and she definitely wore it well; I also like how she paired it with this dress we’ve seen previously.

Astrid is looking so fab in this blue and white ensemble! The jaunty boater is perfect for her, and I hope I can only look half as good if/when I’m ever in a wheelchair. Brava!

  3. Queen Mary’s headpiece is beautiful, but I think it is better suited for a wedding-type affair. Her fedora is spot on, she looks great with it. Queen Sonja looks great, as does CP Mette-Marit with her flying brim! Princess Astrid looks stylish in one of my favorite color combinations – navy and white.
