Creative Industries Garden Party

Members of the British Royal Family attended the Sovereign’s Creative Industries Garden Party at Buckingham Palace last Tuesday.

King Charles repeated his black antique silk top hat. With his patterned tie and pocket square and pink waistcoast (you need one of these, too, ChicagoChuck!), it tops a very handsome ensemble. I’m loving the addition of coloured waistcoats to his formal looks!

Queen Camilla topped her blush dress with a repeated pale ivory hat with asymmetrically peaked crown and a wide, sideswept brim trimmed in multiple layers of sand coloured jinsin ribbon wrapped around the base of the crown and looped into an open knot at the side.

Some of you have been waiting for the Duchess of Gloucester to repeat her emerald braided straw boater… and she did! This vibrant, wide brimmed design is simply trimmed with a hatband and provided interesting contrast against her pale turquoise ensemble.

  1. I was thinking about Camilla’s other pink hats and thought about the large wheel she wore for a big occasion. When I looked I realised it was Harry’s wedding. This looks like the same dress – I suppose wearing the matching hat would have drawn press focus away from this event too much.

  2. A nice set of repeated hats. I quite like the natural tones of Camilla’s accessories with pink, and I like Birgitte’s colour combo too. The gents look dapper as always.

  3. As others have said, Camilla’s dress is great, the hat is fab, but they’re not a match. If she wanted to contrast, plain white was the way to go here. But she brought the Williamson out, so that’s the headliner here.

I rather like Birgitte’s colour combo here, she looks great.

  4. I would echo other comments; the Queen’s coat dress is good, the hat is good, but the combination is not very pleasing. Camilla has so many great hats, it seems perverse to choose one that really doesn’t complement the coat! Perhaps she had some rationale behind the choice that isn’t obvious…

The Duchess of Edinburgh shows what a timeless style a boater is with this 30+ year old hat! I can’t say that I wouldn’t prefer something a bit more interesting, but it’s a nice colour and her outfit overall is elegant.

  5. Both of these garden parties have shown Charles at some of his sartorial best, and I’m glad he’s embracing some more color, even if done subtly.

However, I was a bit disappointed with Camilla. While the hat is a reliable one, I thought her dress was off-white/cream at first due to being washed out in the sunlight, but once I saw it was pink, I didn’t think it paired so well colorwise with this hat, especially when she has some light pink hats that surely would work.

Of course you know I yelled for joy when I saw Birgitte in this emerald green boater again! I do think the copper orange ensemble was a better and more exciting choice, but this pale sky blue still works. Hopefully she doesn’t make me wait another 6 years to see this hat again! 😉 Thank you Birgitte!

  6. This is a beautiful hat on Queen Camilla but I do agree it doesn’t quite gel with this pink coatdress. I prefer all the outfits worn with it on previous occasions. The Williamson Diamond Brooch is truly gorgeous.

The Duchess of Gloucester looks elegant as always. The green boater is so lovely. I like the colour combination with the aqua coat and dress and the long pearls with green accents.

    King Charles is dapper indeed.

  7. The Royal breakfast table conversation must have been slightly awkward when the king declared: “Camilla, with the recent purchase of my new waistcoats, there is not enough in the Royal coffers for a new hat. You’ll need to make due with what you have.”

Two of the ensembles lacked a proper color coordination IMO: Camilla must have a pink or white hat, and, though the green boater is awesome, it was much better combined last time ’round with the orange dress.

  8. A shout out from Hat Queen! What a nice surprise! And, yes, you are correct, time for me to procure a lovely pink waistcoat. I already have a powder blue and a soft yellow waistcoat so why not a pink one? But I’m seriously considering a grey morning suit. I love how HM is wearing these Spring/Summer pastel colored waistcoats with his grey suit. Also off subject, HM Queen Camilla bringing out the big gun Williamson brooch! The center pink diamond was given to then Princess Elizabeth with HM Queen Mary accompanying her to receive it. There are photos where you can clearly see Queen Mary was almost salivating she wanted that diamond so much. Princess Elizabeth had Cartier design the gorgeous flower brooch to showcase the diamond. I love the pink diamond as an accompaniment to the pink waistcoat!
