Trooping the Colour 2024

Trooping the Colour took place in London today, officially celebrating the birthday of King Charles III.  The event featured over 1,400 soldiers and officers, 200 horses and more than 400 musicians from ten different bands and Corps of Drums.

The Princess of Wales wore a wide brimmed saucer with central, shallow black straw crown and white sinamay extended brim, trimmed with a statement black feather. It’s a great hat made ever better by Kate looking so well.

Lady Gabriella Kingston was also spotted watching the event in what looks like a pillbox percher with bow. I know many of you join me in wishing her well after the loss of her husband.

Thoughts about these hats toady in rainy London?

  1. It was nice to see the full working family out together again and everyone looking well!

Sadly I was let down by Camilla by her choosing to repeat another beige/cream hat. Her outfit was a pale mint color, so why not bring out one of the hats she has in that color?

Kate’s is reminiscent of what she wore 2 years ago, but this one is a better look overall IMO.

I like Sophie in this shade of yellow as an unexpected surprise, but I’m not thrilled with some of the design details of this hat.

I think Louise looked fantastic in her mother’s hat and this repeated dress; she was my personal favorite overall!

Finally, Birgitte looked fine, although this was a lot of beige, especially since she looked to be wearing green under coat and in the emeralds of her necklace. No surprise for Sophie, but a nice low key look nevertheless.

  2. BEAR SKIN HATS: I LOVE them, but I can’t imagine the discomfort they inflict on the wearer, though. And visibility is curtailed somewhat, also. All for tradition and fashion.

CAMILLA: Business as usual, in a good sense. My monitor picks up her dress/coat as a very faint pale green.

SOPHIE: Nicely done with the yellow ensemble – a good color for her.

KATE: Excellent all the way! What about black shoes instead?

LOUISE: I side with those who feel the whole look is too busy. Last year’s Coronation ensemble is more satisfying to me.

BIRGITTE: Safe, but bland choice for a new hat.

  3. The design of the PssoW’s hat is extremely light and elegant: I love the proportions and how the placement angle is echoed below by the bow; she looked wonderful overall – I hope such a successful appearance provided a boost to morale.

Although I very much like QC’s look overall, this particular Treacy design is not one of my favourites: the high, angular crown is less flattering.

And although I like the colour of the DssoE’s outfit, I find the design of the hat to be rather clunky and its use of the dress fabric too matchy-matchy.

Lady Louise looks very spring-like but I agree with Fleur-Josephine that the hat and fabric design details clash. The DssoG’s choice of hat, necklace, neckline and colour scheme is excellent.

  4. I had the unexpected pleasure of accidentally discovering the entire Trooping ceremony covered live on American TV, something I don’t recall ever happening before, so I was definitely looking forward to the comments here. I agree that it was fantastic to see Kate looking so well — even better in these close-up photos than I could see on television — and her entire ensemble was perfectly coordinated from head to toe. I also loved the addition of the large bow to the neck of the dress, which she had worn previously with a plain neckline — it did a great job to tie in the hat.

Camilla looked very elegant in her all-white outfit and I enjoyed seeing that hat again, but (it’s been said before) I always find that when she wears all white, it’s sometimes hard to distinguish where the hat ends and her hair begins. I wonder if, for such an important event, a little color might have been preferable.

Sophie looked wonderful and I agree that the yellow is a good color for her — the veil kept the hat from being a little too plain.

Lady Louise is so grown-up I didn’t even recognize her initially. And I have to say respectfully that I disagree with Fleur-Joéphine — the hat is indeed very busy, but in my opinion, it looks much better with Louise’s dress this year than it did with Sophie’s at Ascot.

The Duchess of Gloucester’s new hat is attractive — you must have seen other photos of it to know that it is open-crowned. I would not have guessed that from these photos or the TV coverage. Nice photo also of Lord & Lady Frederick, which raises a question just out of curiosity — do the non-senior royals who are not on the balcony have a special place from which to view the proceedings? Hard to imagine that they’re just out there among the throngs or in a room watching it on television like the rest of us!

  5. Kate’s My Fair Lady inspired look is very elegant. The hat is not dissimilar to the one she wore for Trooping 2 years ago, but they’re not the same. She looks well and happy, and sure that made us all smile.
Otherwise I love Sophie’s lemon outfit – it’s not a colour I recall seeing her in before, and it looks great.

  6. I love the hats Queen Camilla, Sophie, Kate and Lady Frederick Windsor wore.

Kate’s hat looks somehow familiar. I have the feeling she has already worn this hat in another colour but can’t picture what and when. Am I the only one?

I don’t like the pairing Louise made between the dress and hat. The dress is busy enough for this hat, and vice versa.

  7. The royal ladies all look splendid. I cannot single any one person out. Splendid to see the Princess of Wales.
