Wessexes Commemorate Sri Lankan Independence

The Earl and Countess of Wessex completed a five day visit to Sri Lanka yesterday. On Saturday, they officially represented Queen Elizabeth II at celebrations marking the Asian nation’s 70th Independence Day. For this event, Sophie repeated a statement saucer hat with cream straw button base and striped crin brim (with raised pleats at the top of the design) trimmed with  grey and cream crin curls and black feathers.

This hat has always been one I’ve described as sophisticated and while I wouldn’t use the same description for Sophie’s daisy printed dress, the two pair fairly well together. I prefer this hat paired with the sleek cream and navy striped silk coat Sophie paired with it in the past but understand the tropical climate required a lighter weight frock. What do you think of this hat’s third outing on Saturday?

Queen And Duke Attend Church in West Newton

Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh attended Sunday Service at St Peter and St Paul Church in West Newton this morning. After the service, they took time to greet assembled well wishers, giving photographers an opportunity to get some lovely shots of Her Majesty’s red hat.

An early version of Angela Kelly’s split crown design, the hat is covered in the same textured red  bouclé wool silk as the matching coat and trimmed with red Lady Amhurst feathers anchored with overlapping red felt leaves. The hat balances extremely well with the crisscross collar on the coat and while the overall ensemble is fairly one note and could use a few tweaks (different trim on the hat, smaller buttons on the coat etc.), it works.

This Week’s Extras

Royal Hats

Queen Elizabeth in a very familiar (and much worn) blue hat for church last weekend at Sandringham. Princess Anne repeated a brown fur brimless hat.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge wrapped up their visit to Norway yesterday with some more winter recreation with Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit. William sported the Navy Snow Star Bobble Hat from Gandys London while Kate wore the cream chunky knit Jasmine Beanie from Barts.  Crown Princess Mette-Marit wore the black Caid deluxe cashmere knit hat from Zadig & Voltaire.

Queen Visits RAF Marham

Queen Elizabeth visited RAF Marham today in her capacity as Honorary Air Commodore of the Station. To receive a Royal Salute and flypast, meet station personnel and community volunteers, open the Lightning Operations Centre, view a display commemorating the Centenary of the Royal Air Force and present the Firmin Sword of Peace to the Station Commander, she wore a new ‘split crown’ style hat in deep purple felt.

In a darker shade than the orchid version Her Majesty debuted last year , this hat features an upturned brim. Photos of the trim are scarce but it appears to consist of a looped bow and felt pompoms on the right side. Details aside, the colour is absolutely beautiful on the Queen, who wears these saturated shades so magnificently.

Even without good views of this hat (I believe most British royal photographers are en route back from Norway where they were following the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge), this one seems like a winner to me. What do you think of this new, royal purple design?

Duke And Duchess of Cambridge Arrive in Norway

After completing their visit to Sweden this morning, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge departed for Norway. After a greeting at Oslo airport by Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit, they were received by the King and Queen at the royal palace.

After lunch together, most of the combined group took a walk through Princess Ingrid Alexandra Sculpture Park. For this activity, the Duchess donned her chocolate alpaca hat.

I’m going to repeat almost everything I said when this hat’s black twin was worn in Stockholm on Tuesday – it’s a practical, warm choice for a Nordic outdoor engagement and the repeat of faux fur on Kate’s cuffed gloves ties the hat into the ensemble really well. The chocolate and turquoise colour combination is a classic one that looks great on Kate and gives a pop of colour in group photographs.

I’m a little surprised that the Swedish and Norwegian royals skipped hats for these outdoor events- I suppose they are simply used to colder temperatures.
