Danish Queen Embarks on Summer Cruise

Queen Margrethe set off today on the second leg of this year’s annual summer cruise around the islands of her country. Today’s itinerary included visits to Kongsøre Naval Station along with stops at Dragsholm Castle, an children’s educational art program, a manufacturing facility, Algade town center, a nursing care centre, an art museum and a former fish market all located in Odsherred Municipality.

For this busy day of events, Queen Margrethe repeated the red bumper hat she first wore back in May. Today’s better view of this piece show it to be a bumper design with wide cuff brim embellished with stitching around the brim edge and a flat patterned bow at the side. Seeing this hat in full confirmed my initial assessment that while it is not the most exciting of millinery designs, it tops a vibrant and balanced ensemble that looks great on Margrethe. This is one of the times when the whole picture works better than a hat on its own and I particularly like how the streamlined cut of the coat are enlivened by the high contrast pattern on Margrethe’s dress.

Hats From the Past

Royal Hats to this day, forty-six years ago, when the House of Orange played host to an Indonesian state visit. It’s not often that both host and guest don hats for a state visit but such was the case with Head Of The Indonesian State, Haji Mohammed Suharto, and Queen Juliana of the Netherlands. Juliana’s combination of wide coat collar, wide hat brim and funky glasses is certainly memorable.

British Royals Attend Braemar Gathering

Queen Elizabeth, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales and the Princess Royal all braved stormy weather in Scotland today to attend the annual Braemar Gathering at Royal Deeside. The only one in her family to wear a hat, the Queen repeated a lavender purple design we’ve seen hear wear many times before.

The tall crown on this piece follows an hourglass shape and carries the hat’s only embellishment- rows of diagonally placed pin tucks- echoed from the Queen’s coat. The shape of this hat has always been too exaggerated for my taste but I must admit, it creates a very unified ensemble in combination with the coat. The colour also works very well for an outdoor event in the Scottish Highlands.

The first hat is clearly designed as a perfect match for the dress it accompanied and stands slightly apart from the others as the only piece made of fabric. The remaining three intrigue me- all are from the same designer and all are made of straw, making them less tied to a particular outfit. The designs are so similar, I can’t help wondering why all three were added to Máxima’s millinery wardrobe. I suppose slight variations in colour probably account for this but it seems peculiar to have three such similar designs in very close colours in one’s hat closet. The last hat was the first one to appear in 2011 and I wonder, dearest readers- do you think the others were necessary additions?
