Christening of Prince Alexander of Sweden

Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia of Sweden brought their young son, Prince Alexander, to Drottningholm Palace Church today to be christened.

Princess Sofia topped her white lace Ida Sjöstedt suit  with a simple headband of three rows of faux pearls criss-crossed with gold beads. The pairing of pearls and white lace reads as very bridal (perhaps an intended reference as the suit’s designer also made Sofia’s wedding dress last year) and I think a small percher or calot hat in natural straw with a multi looped bow or feather trim would have gone a long way to de-wedding this look.

The star of this event was clearly young Prince Alexander, who seemed less interested in millinery than he did chewing on his newly acquired order, holding his grandpa’s finger and chattering away to his cousin Oscar. Adorable.

Hats From the Past

Royal Hats to 93 years ago today and two queens (one current and one future) in a pair of marvellous hats. The 1920s modified cloche shape is so great on a young Duchess of York. Push the top brim back toward the hat and you have nearly the same millinery shape she favoured sixty years later.

Day 2 & 3 of Danish Late Summer Cruise

Queen Margrethe continued her visit to Odsherred Municipality yesterday with stops at several museums and a converted fish market. She repeated her versatile natural straw hat, opting to place the turned down brim to the back and adding a hatband in the same plaid as her skirt. It’s a prim ensemble (very reminiscent of a school uniform) that ,I suppose, works for a cruise thanks to the nautical colour scheme.

Nautical hues continued today for stops in Favrskov Municipality with Queen Margrethe in a much repeated red straw hat. I don’t recall seeing it paired before with this navy dress and red jacket- the more streamlined pieces worked very well together and provided a wonderful backdrop for this hat (dare I say, giving it a new lease on life?). When it comes to Queenly nautical chic, this ensemble gets my vote.

Norwegian Royals on State Visit to Finland

King Harald and Queen Sonja of Norway were welcomed at the Finnish Presidential Palace in Helsinki today by President Sauli Niinistö and Jenni Haukio to start a three-day state visit.

For the official welcome and visit to Parliament, Queen Sonja repeated the navy straw hat she first wore in May this year. Today’s outing gave us a better look at this piece which features a slightly domed crown and upturned brim edged in wide ecru silk ribbon. The ecru silk edging and darker hat band are my favourite elements on this hat as they provide wonderful contrast that works so well with Queen Sonja’s striped jacket (interestingly, a different striped navy and ecru jacket than she wore with the hat last time).

While the hat looks great in side profile above, from the front view, I don’t think the shape, scale and placement work. When the upturned brim is tilted back on Sonja’s head, the proportion of the hat optically shrinks leaving a too small hat that looks borrowed from a children’s sailor costume.

Queen Sonja’s second ensemble of the day included a cafe-au-lait coloured pillbox which matched a wonderful laser cut leather jacket. The mix of modern and retro styles here is so unexpectedly fun and while the pillbox takes back seat to the jacket, it works because the ensemble works so well together. It’s difficult to tell from this photo what the hat is made of but I really, really hope it’s also leather.

Today’s first day of the state visit to Finland had both a millinery hit and a millinery miss for me- what is your assessment?

Danish Royals Commemorate Flag Day

Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary attended a parade and church service yesterday in commemoration of national Flag Day (a remembrance holiday for deployed military personel, veterans and those lost in action.

For this event, Crown Princess Mary repeated a calot hat in natural straw trimmed with three bow loops at the side. It’s a simple hat but one that always looks great against Mary’s dark hair. I thought the hat was a great counterpoint to Mary’s black dress and jacket and lifted the ensemble without venturing outside appropriateness for the more sombre event.
