Danish Royals on Day 4 of Indonesian Visit

The Danish royal couple continued their busy programme of events today in Indonesia with visits to the Prambanan Temple in Yogyakarta and Palace Kraton where the the Sultan of Yogyakarta hosted a lunch. For these more informal events, Queen Margrethe topped her cotton striped dress with a simple natural straw hat. The warm colour and scale of the piece was perfect for the queen while the shape, with a curved brim and flat crown, gave it air of stylish casual ease.

Danish Royals on Day 3 of Indonesian Visit

Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik had a busy day of engagements in Jakarta today which saw them open a design and lifestyle fair as well as a green office building, lay a wreath at a war memorial and pay visits to the national museum and a shopping centre. For this busy programme, Queen Margrethe repeated her  royal blue straw hat with white under brim. with band around the base of the crown and looped bow trim. The hat coordinates so well with her blue and white printed silk dress and made for another very attractive ensemble.

I’m not sure if it’s the tropical climate that agrees so well with the Queen (and her closet) but don’t you agree that she is looking great on this tour?

Danish Royals on Day 2 of Indonesian Visit

Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik of Denmark were officially welcomed to Indonesia by President Joko Widodo and his wife Iriana Joko Widodo at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta today. For the occasion, Queen Margrethe repeated her pale blue straw hat with round crown and lattice woven ‘slice’ shaped diagonal brim. The hat is trimmed in a spray of pink silk cockscomb flowers and green feather leaves that echo the print in the Queen’s dress and coat. The first time we saw this hat, Queen Margrethe paired it with the same dress and a bright pink jacket– today’s pairing with her flowing coat creates a much softer look where the trim on the hat balances beautifully with the coat and dress. For a royal visit in a tropical climate, I think this ensemble hits just the right note and Queen Margrethe looks fantastic in it.

Danish Royals Arrive in Indonesia

Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik of Denmark arrived at Jakarta airport this afternoon for the start of a four day Indonesian visit. For their arrival, followed by a reception with Danish expatraites living in the South Asian country, Queen Margrethe wore a silk linen covered hat with indented crown and brim that raised slightly on one side.

The fedora-esque hat (the crown indent here shows this is not a true fedora) was trimmed in a band around the base of the crown in the same striped fabric as Margrethe’s blouse. While the shape of the hat is smart, I would much prefer it in straw to bring some much needed textural contrast to this outfit. Coordinating royal hats to ensembles is always a good idea but this one, where the exact fabrics of the Queen’s suit and blouse are repeated on her hat, is too much for me.

You can see the royal couple’s full programme here. With an official welcome, wreath laying and commemoration of Indonesia’s 70th annivesary of independence on the schedule, I think we’ll see a few more royal hats before this trip is over!

Danish Opening of Parliament

The Danish Royal Family gathered together yesterday in Copenhagen to witness the official opening of Parliament. Queen Margrethe led her family at this annual event with a repeat of her red felt hat trimmed in bands of the same tweed as her suit. While it’s a serviceable enough working ensemble and Margrethe wears such classic millinery shapes well, I was disappointed not to see a new hat for the Queen at this high profile event.

Crown Princess Mary set off a beautiful silver lace pencil skit with a black tunic, accessories and her much worn black felt calot hat. In an unexpected move, she added new life to the piece with spray of large felt leaves and feathers added to the side. It’s a brilliant move to rejuvenate an old hat and I thought the piece was elevated by the addition.

Princess Marie repeated the purple felt hat she unveiled back in March for the Dutch state visit. The piece, which has a similar feel to a fedora (but without the distinctive pinches at the the top of the crown that characterize a fedora), is a fantastic shape, scale and colour for Marie and she wears it very well.

Princess Benedikte was the only member of the family to début a new hat. In sky blue felt, her hat included the pinched crown of a fedora, the indented top of a Pork Pie and the sharply upfolded diagonal brim of a ‘slice’. With so much going on with the shape of this piece, the designer did well to leave the hat unembellished and Princess Benedikte paired it beautifully with a streamlined beige coat, charcoal accessories and blue jewels. It’s an interesting hat that looks wonderful on her.

As with years past, yesterday’s opening of Parliament brought a quartet of interesting Danish Royal hats. Which one(s) stood out most to you?
