The Danish Royal Family gathered together yesterday in Copenhagen to witness the official opening of Parliament. Queen Margrethe led her family at this annual event with a repeat of her red felt hat trimmed in bands of the same tweed as her suit. While it’s a serviceable enough working ensemble and Margrethe wears such classic millinery shapes well, I was disappointed not to see a new hat for the Queen at this high profile event.

Crown Princess Mary set off a beautiful silver lace pencil skit with a black tunic, accessories and her much worn black felt calot hat. In an unexpected move, she added new life to the piece with spray of large felt leaves and feathers added to the side. It’s a brilliant move to rejuvenate an old hat and I thought the piece was elevated by the addition.

Princess Marie repeated the purple felt hat she unveiled back in March for the Dutch state visit. The piece, which has a similar feel to a fedora (but without the distinctive pinches at the the top of the crown that characterize a fedora), is a fantastic shape, scale and colour for Marie and she wears it very well.

Princess Benedikte was the only member of the family to début a new hat. In sky blue felt, her hat included the pinched crown of a fedora, the indented top of a Pork Pie and the sharply upfolded diagonal brim of a ‘slice’. With so much going on with the shape of this piece, the designer did well to leave the hat unembellished and Princess Benedikte paired it beautifully with a streamlined beige coat, charcoal accessories and blue jewels. It’s an interesting hat that looks wonderful on her.
As with years past, yesterday’s opening of Parliament brought a quartet of interesting Danish Royal hats. Which one(s) stood out most to you?

Love Princess Benedikte’s outfit! Hat Colour and accessories just gorgeous.
Princess Benedikte has the winning look here I believe. The hat is a great color and shape for her, and it is simple and elegant. It coordinates perfectly with her outfit and jewels. My second favorite hat is Crown Princess Mary’s calot. It is good that she recycles her hats so well, but changes the trims to create a new look. I just wish she wasn’t wearing so much black for a daytime event. Third best hat is Princess Marie’s hat. I like the fedora shape on her, and the purple color is flattering to her coloring. I’m just not sure that the beige outfit is the best pairing for this hat. Something brighter like pink I feel could have made the hat color seem less dull. My least favorite of the hats is Queen Margrethe’s. I don’t like the thickness of the band, and it sits too high on the crown. The turquoise brooch and earrings are beautiful, but they jar with the other colors she is wearing. Those clod-hopper shoes are awful.
I like most of the hats, but especially Princess Benedikte’s, which is very lively, very alert to me, somehow. And who is the man going up the steps with her in that one photo? Not her husband, I don’t think? Is he a royal, even?
It’s interesting how the Danish opening of Parliament seems very casual compared to many other countries. I think everyone looked nice here, but I wasn’t wowed. Margarethe looks great in red, but the matching tweed material on her hat and outfit is a bit much for me. Mary is very chic and I like the addition of the feathers to this hat; my only complaint is that her whole ensemble seemed slightly funereal, especially with the black gloves. I like Marie’s hat, but again, not wowed by it. I think overall Benedikte wins as my personal favorite because she brought out a new hat in a fun color; she should try out more of these slice brims in the future.

I love the Queen and her quirky style, which always makes me wonder why she repeats her hats and clothes so often. Her sister and daughters-in-law are always so fashion forward, and so it the Prince Consort, and at least her younger son – we all remember his pink trousers! Oh well, she is a happy engaged person, so that counts for a lot.
