Ascot 2024 Day 3: Snowdon & Chattos

The Earl of Snowdon, Daniel Chatto and Lady Sarah Chatto were all included in today’s carriage procession. The Earl repeated a black top hat.

Daniel also repeated a black top hat. Sarah wore a new hat in vibrant blue with a wide floppy brim made of sewn polyester braid. It feels too casual for the races and I wish she’d repeated this one, worn with this same dress, instead.

Ascot 2024 Day 3: Princess Royal & Family

For the third day of racing, Princess Anne repeated a grey sinamay stovepipe hat trimmed with a grey sinamay bow edged in blue ribbon, a layered blue ribbon hatband and a spray of grey feathers. Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence repeated a grey felt top hat.

It’s such a well balanced hat and pairs beautifully with Anne’s brocade coat and dress. How I wish she went to Amy Morris Adams for all her hats.

Mike Tindall topped a grey morning suit with his black silk top hat.

Zara wore a pale periwinkle sinamay bergère hat trimmed with an oversized white tulle pompom.

The whole look is magnificent, the straight lines of the hat a perfect counterpoint for the puffed sleeves and embellished neckline on the dress. Everything is in great proportion, from the hat’s scale and brim tilt to the skirt and sleeve lengths… perhaps except for the belt, but that’s a minor quibble. On it’s own, this is a great hat but as part of this whole look, it’s simply perfect.

Ascot 2024 Day 3: The Edinburghs

Ladies’ Day at Royal Ascot saw the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh in attendance, the Duke in his impeccable black antique silk top hat.

The Duchess wore a saucer hat in layered dusky pink pinokpok and lighter pink sinamay. The underside of the raised brim is trimmed with draped organza in similar shades of muted pink.

The shape of the saucer is great, as is the colour on Sophie. I’m less keen on the organza trim and would have chosen a hat in a different colour to pair with this dress.

Ascot 2024 Day 3: The King & Queen

The King joined his wife for the third day of racing today at Ascot Racecourse, again in his black silk top hat (and another coloured waistcoat!).

Queen Camilla wore in third new hat in as many days, a wide brimmed design in white sinamay with sweeping brim upturned on one side and a swirl-peaked crown. The hat is dwarfed by a giant white silk rose and wired white silk sashes that fan out around the crown.

Like yesterday’s hat, these as flying, stacked sashes give wonderful texture and movement to the design. Have we seen the shape before? Absolutely. As for the colour… after two days of gorgeous blue, a return to cream is a bit of a letdown not even that giant rose can lift.
