Catching Up With The Imperial Royals

Last Friday, Prince Akishino and Princess Mako visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. For this visit, Princess Mako wore a simple navy hat with short, rolled brim.

Yesterday, Crown Prince Naruhito, Crown Princess Masako and Princess Aiko attended a ceremony in celebration of national Water Day. For this event, Crown Princess Masako repeated a white hat with flat brim and squared crown, trimmed with a pale blue hatband to match her suit. It’s not going to win any awards for vibrancy but its a smart hat nonetheless.

Imperial Royals Open Park

Crown Prince Naruhito and Crown Princess Masako were in Kashiwa City yesterday to open a new public park. Perhaps in reference to her husband’s speech at the event (he talked a lot about how important green spaces are to nurture people), the Crown Princess topped her green suit with a cream hat. Trimmed in a matching green hat band, the design of this piece featured a squared crown and slightly upturned brim. It’s a simple piece but one that is well suited to both Princess Masako and engagements such as this.

What do you think of Princess Masako’s green trimmed hat (for a very green event!) yesterday?

Imperial Couple Attend Nagano Festival

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko travelled to Nagano this weekend to attend the 67th National Tree-Planting Festival. for their train journey and arrival on Saturday, Empress Michiko repeated her teal blue saucer hat trimmed with black and white silk bow (it’s not visible in these photos but the bow coordinates with a black and white skirt the Empress usually pairs with this ensemble). It’s always nice to see Michiko in some saturated colour.

For the festival’s main events on Sunday, the Empress repeated her white and grey double-layer disk hat with white bow and silk flower trim. The grey underbrim on this piece provided a very subtle contrast to Michiko’s pale blue-grey suit- a minor detail but an interesting one on someone whose ensembles are usually perfectly matched. Michiko has mixed and matched this hat with more several different suits (something we seldom see her do) and since any fashion experimentation on the Imperial royals is a good thing, I’m all for it.

Hitachi Couple Attend Memorial

Masihito, Prince Hitachi and Princess Hanako attend a WW II memorial ceremony at Chidorigafuchi National Cemetery yesterday (the cemetery holds the ashes of 2,337 Japanese soldiers recovered from Russia and South Pacific Islands). For this event, Princess Hanako wore a smart black hat with square crown and a downward facing lampshade brim. This style of brim can often overwhelm the wearer but the reduced scale of this design works well for Hanako.

Japanese Royals in Italy

Prince Fumihito and Princess Kiko visited Italy earlier this month. While their program included visits to the Vatican and Bologna, some of their time in Rome was not covered by the mainstream media and we missed a new hat worn by Princess Kiko on May 11 (thanks to reader Angela for finding this!). In natural textured straw, this design features a rounded crown and cartwheel brim and is trimmed in a wide hatband in the same navy silk stripe as Kiko’s dress. The scale of the piece is much larger than she usually wears and the overall ensemble is a far more bold and graphic one than we have seen on her in a very, very long time. It’s not the best hat or dress she has ever worn, but it is a departure and that’s worth something in the world of Imperial Royal fashion.

Thanks again, Angela, for passing this along. What do you all think of this uncharacteristically graphic hat on Princess Kiko?
