Imperial Couple Visit Nara Prefecture

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko of Japan traveled to Nara Prefecture on Saturday to begin a three-day visit in the area. For the first day of their visit, where they met Asuka Town residents affected by floods in 2011, Empress Michiko wore a dove grey saucer hat. The hat had a slightly raised rim and was trimmed with a large, layered origami bow.

On Sunday, the Imperial couple attended the 34th National Meeting for Healthy Ocean, held in Kawakami Village. For this event, the main reason for the couple’s visit, Empress Michiko repeated a petite, flat cream saucer hat trimmed the bows which coordinated with her black and white houdstooth suit set.

For the final day of this trip today, The Emperor and Empress visted the oldest Shinto Shrine in Japan, Omiwa Shrine in Sakurai City. Empress Michiko wore a pale beige rimmed saucer hat trimmed with a bow in the same fabric as her suit jacket.

While the hats worn by the Empress on this trip are fairly neutral ones in shapes we have seen her in many times, I was intrigued by the coloured scarves she added to her suits yesterday and today. It’s lovely to see even little flashes of colour in her wardrobe! What do you think of this trio of saucer hats worn in Nara Precture?

Princess Yoko Supports Universal Design

In August 2013, Princess Yoko of Mikasa became patron of the International Association for Universal Design. In her capacity as patron, she was in Koriyama City yesterday to take part in pre-conference events related to the upcoming 5th International Conference for Universal Design which will occur in Fukushima and Tokyo. For this engagement, Princess Yoko topped her white suit with a coordinating white fedora hat. Her low ponytail set the hat off well and I thought the fedora shape was great on her. It’s wonderful to see the ladies of the Imperial family experimenting with new hat shapes, isn’t it?

Japanese Royals Attend World Education Conference

Over the past two days, Crown Princes Naruhito and Crown Princess Masako of Japan have attended the UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development in Nagoya City. Crown Princess Masako’s attendance at such events is cause enough for celebration, dear readers, but that’s just the beginning. She attended, looking confident in an elegant oxblood suit with matching hat. The flat brimmed hat, with a slightly squared crown, was trimmed with a double band around the crown, I believe in the same fabric as her suit. Imagine- a Japanese royal hat in a saturated colour and a brim?! Such is the realization of our royal millinery dreams! Most of us are not-so-secret cheerleaders of the Imperial Crown Princess and I suspect, dear readers, you’re going to join me in giving Masako a standing ovation of happy claps for this hat.

Imperial Family Hosts Honorary Tea Party

Members of the Imperial Family hosted a tea party for this year’s recipients of the Order of Culture at the Imperial Palace today. While the Empress and Princess Kiko both wore a traditional kimono, Crown Princess Masako chose a white suit and coordinating hat. This squared bowler hat with short, upturned brim appears to be trimmed with a sash band around the crown topped by very narrow braided trim. While I wish for feathers, flowers or something to embellish these demure Imperial hats, braided trim is a tiny step in the right direction.
