Hat From the Past

Royal Hatsto this day in 1987 when a white bumper hat trimmed with a dotted veil and large red silk poppy was worn in Berlin during a state visit to Germany. Designed by Ian Thomas, this hat is one of the rare ones that looks better off the head, I think, all due to the position of that poppy. Much better on the side than smack in the middle of the back, don’t you think?

Duchess of Gloucester Hosts Garden Party

The annual Not Forgotten Association Garden Party was held at Buckingham Palace yesterday. Hosted by the Duchess of Gloucester, the event is in support of the charity, which provides support for both current and former servicemen and women facing illness, injury or disability. She repeated her vibrant yale blue straw pillbox hat with a newly added swath of net veiling in the same colour

It’s a great hat for someone who doesn’t wear hats every day- the classic shape and colour lends the hat to successful pairing with many different ensembles and the scale suits Birgitte well. The addition of veil also adds a bit of formality and movement to the hat that benefit it.

What do you think, dear readers- is this hat better with or without the veil?

Swedish Monarchs Embark on State Visit to Ireland

King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia kicked off a three-day state visit to the Republic of Ireland yesterday.

For the first day of this visit, Queen Silvia debuted a new molded bumper hat in vibrant magenta felt. The smaller scale hat is trimmed with a felt cutout leaf on one side that anchors a small bunch of feathers that lay accross the front of the design and cascade off the other side.

The colour is wonderful on Queen Silvia as is the angle she wore it, perched slightly on the right side of her head. The hat’s small scale works well with the matching coat (in just slightly a different enough shade for the pieces to still coordinate), the neckline of which goes so well with a hat.

Previously Worn: this hat is new

Sabina Higgins, wife of Irish President Michael Higgins, repeated a a pale pink cocktail hat with dramatic pleated square fan motif on the side. The sculptural piece is a memorable one she wears so well (she first wore it for the Irish state visit to Great Britain in 2014) and I’m so pleased to see again.

Hats From the Past

Royal Hats to this day, 200 years ago, when a princess was born at Kensington Palace who would, ultimate, change the course of the British Monarchy. Remembered more for the immense industrial, scientific, cultural and political change that came during the era of her reign than for her fashion, we celebrate the bicentennial of Queen Victoria’s birth today with a look at a handful of her hats.
