Funeral of Thai King

Royal representatives from around the world gathered in Bangkok yesterday to pay respects to Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej on the first day of his official, three day funeral ceremony. The king, who is now known as King Rama IX, died October 13, 2016 and was, at the time, the world’s longest serving monarch.

Among the many royal mourners at yesterday’s cremation ceremony, three wore headpieces. Queen Máxima repeated her black open crowned headpiece (see a better view of this piece from its last outing over at this post) while Queen Mathilde wore a black calot hat with textured side trim. This piece doesn’t match with other black calots in Mathilde’s wardrobe so I can only assume it is new.

Princess Margaretha of Liechtenstein wore a black fascinator, presumably of flowers or feathers, tucked into the right side of her hair.

Photos of this event are scarce so instead, I quote our friends over at Luxarazzi: “There are hours and hours of coverage of the elaborate and fascinating funeral rituals over on Youtube, the royals can be spotted in these ones here and here, for example.

Princess Beatrix Opens Cultural Center

Princess Beatrix was in Tiel today to officially open the Zinder cultural center for music, dance, theater, art, literature and information. For this event, she repeated a so-dark-it’s-almost-black inky navy blue straw brimless hat with a bumper style brim made of multiple layers of wrapped straw.

The hat is so typical of Princess Beatrix’s millinery style that it’s easy to overlook how unique the design is. And it’s lovely on her. I can’t think of many other royals who could successfully carry it but on her, it really works.

Princess Mako Celebrates Birthday

On Monday, Princess Mako celebrated her 26th birthday and, as per tradition within the Imperial family, paid a visit to her grandparents at the Imperial Palace. For her meeting with the Emperor and Empress, she wore a bumper hat in sunny  yellow. The choice might not seem like a fashionable one to all but the colour is straight up happy and a lovely contrast against her dark hair.

Much has been said in the media this year about the practice of Imperial princesses nearly disappearing from public view after marriage… hopefully, one of the positive freedoms that comes with Mako’s nuptials next year will be the ability to wear whatever she wishes. I often wonder what the young Imperial princesses really think of the traditional, conservative dress expected within the Imperial court.

Straightening a Hat Brim

The Royal Hats Blog Reader Buffy posed the following panicked question, “Hi HatQueen, Hoping you or somebody in the Royal Hats community might be able to help me.  My son is going to be Bert from Mary Poppins for Halloween. The costume came with a straw boater hat but because it was from one of those party stores it came in a plastic hanger bag and the brim is all bent.  Can I rehabilitate it somehow?  Put heavy books on it?  Spritz it with water and try to block it dry?  Or should I just bail and buy him a new hat? He’s so thrilled (Mary Poppins is his favorite movie) that he hasn’t noticed it yet but as a hat person I can’t let him go out in a sub-par hat, even on a dark Halloween night! He LOVES hats (wears a different one every day) so I don’t mind spending money on a new one if this one can’t really be fixed. Thanks for any suggestions!”

Buffy- we certainly cannot have your son going out in a sub-par hat! I’m turning your question over to our readers for help. Dearest readers- what can be done to straighten the brim on this piece?

Princess Alexandra Celebrates Hospice Anniversary

Princess Alexandra commemorated 30 years of care at St Oswald’s Hospice this morning with a visit to the facility. For this visit, 30 years after she opened the care center, she repeated her purple felt hat with tall, domed crown, double hatband and upturned kettle brim.

Many of the royal hats we see rely on some sort of trimmings – feathers, flowers, twists, bows – to provide visual punch and I really like how the streamlined hantbands, one curved and one in a darker shade of purple, do the trick here. Like many of Alexandra’s other hats, I think the scale of this one is a twinge large for her but the colour is lovely and the overall ensemble is balanced.
