Queen Elizabeth Visits Aberdeen Royal Infirmary

Queen Elizabeth visited the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary today to officially open the Robertson Family Roof Garden and meet patients and staff. For this engagement, she repeated a light blue hat in the same bouclé tweed as her coat.

The hat’s shape, with an angular, domed top and upfolded brim, has become a familiar shape for Her Majesty. It’s a tough shape to trim attractively- the navy silk roses and leaves that embellish this design are tightly tucked between the crown and brim simply because it’s the only place for them to go. I think this style might be better suited to sweeping feathers able to avoid this awkward ‘tucked in trim’ look.

Calot hats can easily be boring or one-note but the movement in this one, provided by all those ruched pleats, keeps it interesting. Paired with Máxima’s summery black and white dress and statement earrings, the hat tops an attractive working ensemble.

Querry: Hat Type Quandry

The Royal Hats Blog Young reader Jordan posed a question, “Help me understand what type of hat my favorite royal, H.R.H The Princess Margaret, is wearing in this photo? Maybe you could post it to your site. Your help would be appreciated.”

Jordan- you ask a great question. I’m going to turn this on over to my wonderful readers to give classification to this hat which defies traditional hat type definition. Dearest readers- If you were to name this hat a type, what type would it be?

‘New’ Hat From the Past #31

Royal Hats Kicking off a second series of more ‘New” Hats From the Past”, looking at hats worn by Queen Elizabeth during that 1980s and 1990s that are new to me (and perhaps, new to some of you as well). On September 22, 1998 while on a tour of Malaysia, the Queen wore this taupe straw lampshade hat with tall crown and cream hatband (interestingly placed on top of the brim and not around the base of the crown). Not a vibrant hat, the shape is still very distinctive and I’m surprised I don’t recall seeing it before. Is this is a new hat for you as well?

I’d describe this hat as simple but serviceable – what’s your take on it?
