‘New’ Hat From the Past #25

Royal Hats to August 7, 1997 and an interesting hat worn in Porstmouth as the Queen boarded the royal yacht Britannia for a trip around Western Scotland (the hat’s earlier outing in France in 1992 is shown in the bottom photo). At first glance, this hat is a simply shaped one in yellow straw with a rounded crown and kettle brim. A closer look at the brim shows a second cartwheel brim in cream straw on the underside of the hat, giving the appearance that Her Majesty is sporting a pair of hats stacked on top of the other.  Do you recall this creative and slightly cheeky design?

Royal Hats to July 29, 1984 and a visit to the Sandringham flower show in a prim red straw hat with short upfolded brim and straw hibiscus trim by Frederick Fox. The shape feels very much of the time, doesn’t it?!

Royal Hats to August 1, 1978 and a purple patterned and pleated turban. Not bad, as far as 1970s turbans go.

‘New’ Hat From the Past #22

Royal Hats to July 21, 1988 and a very smart white hat with upswept front brim trimmed with yellow flowers worn on a visit to Devon. While the hat follows the capulet shape favoured by the Queen Mother (a cloche shape with extended front brim that is folded back), the angle shown in this photograph makes it look wonderfully chic, almost foreshadowing the upswept brims that are en vogue today.

Photo angles and pairings can make or break a hat, illustrated here with this design’s repeat in the Caribbean in February 1994 with a printed silk dress. While floral print dresses were very much in style during this time, the resulting pairing of hat and dress doesn’t invoke the same descriptors (chic, streamlined, elegant etc.) that come to mind for the first ensemble.
