British Royals Attend Society Wedding

Several members of the British royal family attended the wedding of James Matthews and Phillipa Middleton today at St.Mark’s Church in Englefield Green. The Duchess of Cambridge used her sister’s wedding to debut a new hat. In the same pale dusky pink as her silk dress, the percher design is built on a flat straw base and features a large crin saucer brim with back fluted pleat with a silk rose and ribbon twists for trim. The scale is lovely on Kate and the hat and dress combine to make a textbook example of monochrome dressing done right. The colour might be a little blergh but it works well on Kate (and is not surprising at an event where I suspect she may prefer to remain in the background).

Princess Eugenie  wore what the milliner describes as a “sinamay straw pillbox with abaca silk bow detail”. While the simple hat is lovely and allowed her dress and shoes to shine, I would have preferred a more modern hat with this statement shouldered dress.

Lady Gabriella Windsor wore a cream straw hat with pinched crown and raise brim on one side, trimmed with a bouquet of white silk roses and slim bow loops. The brim is slightly smaller than Gabriella usually wears but is balanced beautifully, thanks to those unusual crown pinches. It’s a great look for her.

The bride’s veil was made by Stephen Jones while her delicate tiara and glittering hairpin(which anchored her veil on the back of her head) are from Robinson Pelham. Carole Middleton topped her pale pink Catherine Walker coat dress with a hat in the same hue with diagonal brim and silk abacca bow trim (the Twist Detail Upturn from Juliette Botterill). The groom’s mother, Jane Matthews, wore a pale mist green structured beret percher trimmed with coordinating feathers.

All in all, a lovely trio of royal hats at this wedding, don’t you agree?

Dutch Royals Welcome Guests From Mozambique & Qatar

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima rolled out the red carpet this morning at Palace Noordeinde in The Hague to welcome President Filipe Nyusi of Mozambique and his wife Isaura Nyusi on a visit to the Netherlands. For this official welcome, Queen Máxima repeated her beige straw moulded turban. While not my favourite of shapes, this hat’s styling- with Máxima’s hair down, a vibrant Roksanda dress and diamond jewels- is spot on. I think the bell sleeves of this dress required a brimless hat for this ensemble to balance and this one fits the bill.

This afternoon Queen Máxima was joined by Sheikha Moza bint Nasser of Qatar for the Seminar On Protection & Education In Conflict Zones at the The Hague Institute for Global Justice. Sheikha Moza, who gave the keynote speech at the conference, wore a voluminous pale pink turban. This retro design is not for the faint of heart and Moza carries it well. It’s an interesting piece of millinery that meets both the dress requirements of her religion and Moza’s well known love of couture.

Queen Presents New Colours To Scots Guards

Queen Elizabeth presented new colours to the 1st Battalion and F Company Scots Guards at Buckingham Palace today. Joined by the Duke of Kent, the Queen, who is Colonel-in-Chief of the regiment, repeated her pale aqua and white boater hat for this event. The hat features a flat crown covered in the same silk wool crepe as Her Majesty’s coat and a round, straight sided crown made of lacy textured white straw. Trimmed with an aqua organza ruched hatband, bow loops at the side and a handfull of aqua arrow trimmed feathers, the hat has a lot going on but remains fairly balanced. It is a beautiful pairing to the Queen’s coat and patterned dress and, as usual, helped her stand out in a sea of military uniforms at this event.

This is this hat’s fourth outing in as many summer seasons- any new thoughts after seeing it again today?
