Cambridges Attend Irish Guards’ St. Patrick’s Day Parade

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited the 1st Battalion Irish Guards for their St Patrick’s Day Parade today at Mons Barracks, Aldershot. The couple continued the tradition of presenting Shamrock to members of the regiment started by Queen Alexandra in 1901.

The Duchess wore a new hat in deep teal green fur felt. The pillbox design features an indented domed crown and is trimmed with a knotted bow at the side.

The saturated colour is beautiful, showing the smooth lines of the beautiful fur felt to great effect. The shaping of the felt to appear as if gathered by the bow gives some lovely movement to the hat, emphasized by the jaunty angle it was worn today. The hat pairs beautifully with this tweed coat, combining to make an elegant ensemble for Kate.

Prince William wore the full dress uniform of his rank of Colonel of the Irish Guards, complete with cap, smartly trimmed with a fresh sprig of shamrock.

I think this is a great addition to Katie’s millinery wardrobe- what do you think?

Cheltenham Festival 2022 Day 2

Rainy skies did not appear to dampen spirits today at the second day of this year’s Cheltenham Festival. Princess Anne attended the races one of her brimless fur hats, this one with a deepest brown-black bumper brim, a  cozy choice on such a blustery day.

This hat, which dates back at least the late 1980s, has an interesting crown of pieced smooth and patterned suede.

Zara Tidall wore a teardrop beret percher in the loveliest deep petrol blue trimmed with a vine of dark blue leather flowers atop a ruffle of veiling with large navy dots. The layered shades of dark blue work beautifully on this design and pair well with Zara’s woven coat.

Cheltenham Festival 2022 Day 1

The first day of this year’s Cheltenham Festival kicked off today with a trio of royal hats. Zara Tindall wore a beautiful plum button beret percher trimmed with a coordinating silk abaca swirl with hand painted gold stripe. Her husband Mike wore a black newsboy cap with curved visor brim.

Zara’s hat is the standout here- the colour is magnificent and that gold stripe on the silk abaca is a simple touch that elevates the entire look. While this style of hat is one we’ve seen on her many times before, the scale, trim and colour of this one make it standout on its own. We don’t often see royal hats styled with trousers and this ensemble, which is so beautifully balanced, shows how fantastic the look can be when done just right.

Zara’s elder brother, Peter, wore a black newsboy cap with button at the top. The combination of cap, Black Watch tartan coat and purple tie works really well!

Royal Family Attend Commonwealth Day Service

Members of the British Royal Family attended the annual Commonwealth Day Service today at Westminster Abbey.

The Duchess of Cornwall repeated her magnificent purple felt boater hat with raised brim on one side trimmed with two stacked rows of raw-edged pleated silk around the side of the crown and a spray of purple feathers.

This has been a brilliant hat for Camilla for multiple reasons- the colour, scale, shape, contrasting textures are all fantastic on her.  The hat is elevated today with its pairing with a new coat-  the coat’s stripes give a lovely vertical line to the ensemble that pairs so well with the horizontal lines on the hat.

The Duchess of Cambridge wore a new pillbox covered in the more glorious sapphire blue velvet. The classic hat is trimmed with a large, flat bow at the back.

The hat and coat link well thanks to their shared use of that beautiful velvet, the coat’s wool crepe body providing enough contrast for the monochrome ensemble not to fall flat- there’s no one note colour here! And what a fantastic colour and scale it is for Kate.

Princess Alexandra also wore a new hat in deep inky blue sinamay with ruched hatband and a spray of feathers on the side. The slightly raised brim on one side gives a lovely lift to the piece and I really like how the hatband echoes the layered hem on the ensemble’s jacket. It’s lovely all around.

This trio of beautiful designs today is wonderful to see, especially after what has been a hat-starved few weeks for us royal hat fans!
