York Princesses Attend Country Wedding

Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie of York attended the wedding of Jamie Murray Wells and Lottie Fry today in Oxfordshire. For this occasion, both princesses debuted new hats.

Princess Beatrice topped her blue and grey Carven coat with an oversize navy fedora. This hat is a much larger hat than we usually see on Princess Eugenie and it is a wonderful millinery departure for her. Princess Eugenie wore a dove grey felt saucer hat trimmed with braided knots in the same colour as the hat. While I’m not a fan of this hat with Eugenie’s coat and grey jersey dress, I do like the style on her (particularly with her bobbed hairstyle) and the braided knot detail is beautiful. Both hats are rather chic, aren’t they?

British Royals Attend Memorial

Members of the British Royal Family joined the Duchess of Cornwall today at a memorial service for her brother, conservationist and writer Mark Shand, who died in April. Camilla looked very elegant in a simple black straw hat with upturned brim on one side and looped bow on the other.

UPDATE: The designer of this hat, Michelle Boyt of Butterfly Hats, has sent us a better view of this hat! As you see below, the beret base is trimmed with round, flat metal studs and three curling felt tails are attached to the side with a black and silver button. Up close, the hat has much less of a “cocktail party” vibe that several of you raised concerns about- it reads much more as a daytime hat closeup than it did from afar. It is a decidedly modern hat that I think was a great choice for Princess Beatrice and appropriate for this more serious event.

Lady Gabriella Windsor was also in attendance. While I was not able to secure a photo to share, you can see her black straw hat with indented crown, trimmed by black and white feather spines at this article at The Daily Mail. Her hat was also designed by Philip Treacy and I believe it is new.

Seeing Double: Princess Beatrice

Royal HatsWhen Princess Beatrice arrived for the Thames River Pageant celebrating her grandmother’s Diamond Jubilee on June 3, 2012, she wore an interesting grey calot hat that flowed in a wave over her head, ending in a swirled rosette over her ear. It was a hat that did not get much attention amid all the other royal hats that day but the shape certainly was memorable. After the rainy water pageant, I thought this wave-shaped hat would disappear into the back of her closet, ne’er to be seen again.

Two weeks later, however, Princess Beatrice arrived at  Trooping the Colour in this hat’s magenta twin.

While there are slight variations between these two Stephen Jones hats, the distinct shapes are undoubtedly related. These hats are such a unique shape, I wonder what made Princess Beatrice decide to buy two?

Birthday of Princess Beatrice

Royal HatsPrincess Beatrice of York celebrates her 26th birthday today. We have seen her make a remarkable transition in millinery style over the past three years, thanks to the work of young designers such as Sarah Cant, Rosie Olivia and Nerida Fraiman. These days, Beatrice’s hats are more streamlined, clean and elegant and this new style approach suits her very well. In choosing a hat for Beatrice to wear this year, I could have chosen any number of hats from her current go-to designers but decided instead to take a more romantic approach. Beatrice’s long-time beau Dave Clark hails from America and as a nod to him, I have chosen the “Andie” hat made by California based designer Jill Courtemanche.  I think this cream and gold straw fedora with gold leather bow would be marvelously chic on today’s birthday girl. What hat would you like to see Princess Beatrice wear in the coming year?

Hat Mystery: Princess Beatrice’s Gold Hats

Royal Hats  Reader Fiona wrote: Another royal blog (written by someone who knows a ton about royal hats) says that Princess Beatrice wore this gold hat to Ascot before but you say it is a new hat? I’m confused. Is it new or is it a repeat?

2014-06-21 Ascot Day 5 9  Royal Ascot - Day 5

While I certainly make my share of errors in reporting royal hats, I am 100% certain that the gold percher hat Princess Beatrice wore on Day 5 of Ascot this year was a new hat. It was designed by Japanese milliner Misa Harada and is the first Harada design Beatrice has worn (hopefully, the first of many because it is such a lovely hat!). I think the confusion lies here:

At a quick glance, these gold straw percher hats look awfully similar. Keeping royal hats straight is a challenging task (believe you me!), especially when a royal has multiple hats in their millinery wardrobe with the same features. I am not sure why Princess Beatrice might need two gold straw percher hats, both trimmed with chrysanthemum-type floral detail, but it certainly makes it interesting for us royal hat fans, doesn’t it? Thanks for the question, Fiona!
