Imperial Couple Embark on Indian Tour

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko departed Haneda international airport in Tokyo yesterday en route to a week long official visit to India. Empress Michiko wore one of her regular petite saucer hats, this one in cream, trimmed with a black and cream silk bow. I believe this hat is a new one.

The Imperial couple were seen off by their sons and daughter-in-laws. Princess Kiko wore a chocolate bowler hat trimmed with a black ribbon around the crown (another new hat, I believe) while Crown Princess Masako wore a dove grey wool hat with square crown, rolled brim and grey ribbon around the crown. Paired with her suit, I thought Masako’s hat (which I suspect is also new) looked great on her.

Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko’s daughter, Princess Mako of Akishino, also was on hand to bid farewell to her grandparents. Mako wore a squared version of her mother’s bowler hat, with a slightly more upturned brim.

Catching Up With the Imperial Royal Family

In the midst of a month filled with royal events around the world, I apologize, dear readers, that I have not kept up with the Japanese Imperial Family’s engagements. On November 1, the Emperor and Empress attended at Sophia University’s 100th Anniversary. Empress Michiko wore another one of her signature saucer hats, this one in cream with a charcoal grey trailing flower. With her cream and charcoal graphic suit, the overall look was quite smart.

On November 6th, the Imperial Family hosted a tea party for the recipients of the Order of Culture and persons of cultural merits. While Empress Michiko and Princess Kiko wore traditional kimonos, Crown Princess Masako, wore a beautiful creamy pink silk coat dress and matching bumper-style hat. Ordinarily, I would find this hat in need of something – a little embellishment or pop of colour to liven it up. On Masako (who attended this event for the first time in ten years), I thought it was just right.

And finally, on November 11th, Empress Michiko, Princess Kiko and Princess Akiko of Mikasa attended the 474th Concert of Shichikukai at Toka Gakudo, the music hall of Imperial Palace.  Princess Kiko wore a very pale grey hat with wide folded brim while Princess Akiko wore a white bowler style hat with pink ribbon around the crown.

Catching Up with the Japanese Empress

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko of Japan hosted an autumn garden party at the Akasaka Imperial Gardens in Tokyo yesterday. Empress Michiko wore a new petite white saucer hat trimmed with origami ribbon blossoms and hand painted flower stems.

On Monday (October 28), The Emperor and Empress visited Kumamoto prefecture. Our cries for Empress Michiko to wear more colour must have been heard because she wore cerulean blue!  Her hat, another one of her petite saucers, was adorned only with a very simple bow but I’m not complaining because the colour was just lovely on the Empress. Happy claps!

Japanese Royals Attend Nightingale Medals

Empress Michiko, Honorary President of Japan Red Cross Society, presented the Florence Nightingale Medal to several nurses at an award ceremony in Tokyo yesterday.

The Empress wore one of her customary small grey, this one with a rimmed edge and layered bow.  While this does look like many of Michiko’s other hats, I can’t find another instance of her wearing this particular design and guess that this one might be new. I have come to accept these flat millinery designs for The Empress (it really is her signature style) but I dearly wish she would break away from her many, many grey hats and wear a little more colour.

Princess Kiko, Empress Michiko’s daughter-in-law, wore a large white silk pillbox decorated with a flat bow at the back. This is the same hat she wore in September 2006 to present her son, baby Prince Hisahito, to the Shinto Shrine on the grounds of the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.

Princess Hanako, wife of Emperor Akihito’s younger brother Prince Hitachi, wore a pale blue silk bumper hat with a rolled brim. I think the bunch of blue and white cooked spaghetti trimming her hat was a little odd, although it did provide a hit of interest and colour in the otherwise monochrome and very plain hats of the  Imperial ladies!

Princess Hisako, widow of Emperor Akihito’s first cousin Prince Takamado, wore an dove grey silk hat with a tightly upturned brim. I think it looked quite flattering on her although I prefer hats with brims that don’t look so sewn in place. This hat does look great with the high collar of her dress and that fabulous string of pearls.

We don’t often see the Japanese royal ladies at an engagement together so I can’t resist asking you, dear readers, which hat you liked best?

Japanese Imperial Family Celebrates Emporer Akihito’s Birthday

The Imperial Family made a balcony appearance today at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo to greet the large crowd gathered to celebrate Emperor Akihito’s 79th birthday.  Crown Princess Masako and Princess Kiko stuck to their traditional small hats and wore a duo of pillboxes in royal blue and butter yellow to match their frocks.
