Norwegian Royals Celebrate National Day
Members of the Norwegian royal family celebrated Constitution Day today with an annual appearance on the palace balcony for the Oslo children’s parade.

Queen Sonja wore a striking hat in cream straw with a square crown and and wide brim raised on one side. The hat is trimmed with a navy hatband and brim piping, a classic combination that gives high contrast punch to the design. I think it’s a fantastic piece for Sonja. As in years past, King Harald and Crown Prince Haakon both wore morning suits with black silk top hats. I’ll wait for our top hat experts to weigh in but it seems to me that King Harald could do with a slightly larger size.
Crown Princess Mette-Marit stuck to national colours, topping her navy coat with a red beret hat worn on the back of her head. While not my favourite piece, it’s a great colour choice for today’s national holiday.

Swedish Royals Remember Baron Silfverschiöld
Members of the Swedish royal family gathered at Erska Church near Koberg Castle yesterday in to remember the life of Baron Niclas Silfverschiöld, husband of Princess Désirée, who died April 11, 2017 following a brief illness. As is to be expected at such events, the millinery was very simple. Queen Silvia wore a tall black pillbox hat.
Crown Princess Victoria repeated her black felt Yves Stain Laurent wide brimmed Garbo hat with fringe-edged bow at the back and wide Petersham ribbon hatband.
Princess Soia wore a black velvet hair band tied trimmed with a knotted bow at the side.
Princess Christina wore a large brimmed black hat with wide, ruched fabric hatband gathered in a large black buckle. Princess Désirée and the other Haga princesses did not wear hats.
The Danish and Norwegian royal families were represented by Princess Benedikte and Princess Märtha Louise. Princess Benedikte repeated her black hat with diagonally striped, raised bumper brim.
Princess Märtha Louise looked to have borrowed Princess Mette-Marit’s veiled black Jennifer Berh headpiece with slim headband base.

Farewell to Prince Richard of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg
Family of Prince Richard of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg were joined by close royal friends at the Evangelische Stadtkirche in Bad Berleburg, Germany this morning to pay tribute to the prince who died unexpectedly on March 13 at the age of 83. His wife, Princess Benedikte of Denmark, led her family in a black bumper hat with diagonal stripes on the cuff brim.

The couple’s eldest daughter, Princess Alexandra, wore Princess Benedikte’s black Breton hat with short, curled brim bound in silk ping and trimmed with a net tulle veil. Alexandra’s daughter, Countess Ingrid, wore a floral trimmed black headband.

Princess Nathalie also wore one of her mother’s hats, a brimless design with domed crown trimmed with a swath of feathers at the back.

Carina Axelsson, the longtime partner of Prince Richard and Princess Benedikte’s son Prince Gustav, wore moulded black felt cloche hat with extended brim.
Queen Margrethe repeated her black Karakul fur toque with feather pouf trim.

Crown Princess Mary repeated her Susanne Juul designed hat with tall, squared felt crown and straw brim, trimmed with a pair of black feathers while Princess Marie repeated her looped black silk ribbon headpiece.

Queen Anne-Marie wore a short brimmed hat with moulded crown in the shape of a partial Pork Pie, simply trimmed in a Petersham ribbon hatband.

Queen Máxima repeated her Bettina Thomas designed rounded pillbox hat with bow at the back. Princess Beatrix wore a large black straw bumper hat with double upfolded brim.

Norwegian Silver Jubilee
The Norwegian Royal Family gathered in Trondheim today to celebrate the 25th anniversary of King Harald and Queen Sonja’s reign (see a clip of their consecration 25 years ago today, here). This morning, the family attended a service of thanksgiving at Nidaros Cathedral Queen Sonja wore a new hat for the occasion, a simple white straw modified boater style with flat crown and brim.

The hat’s trimming is very restrained with just slim cords of wired straw placed across the front and a simple white hat band. With Sonja’s white dress and coat, the hat makes for a very streamlined ensemble. A little stark, maybe, but she certainly stood out and I think it’s a very elegant look for her.

Crown Princess Mette-Marit topped a new pale blue suit with an aqua net veil headpiece, worn entirely over her face. While I don’t understand the appeal of looping a scrap of net behind one’s ears like an giant surgical mask for ANY occasion (much less such a momentous one), the subtle colour contrast between the two pieces is a nice touch. That’s the only good thing I can find to say about this… thing.

Princess Märtha Louise repeated the pale pink layered feathers and a net tulle veil fascinator she wore to King Carl Gustaf’s birthday celebration earlier this spring. It’s not my favourite of designs but it worked well, particularly paired with her pink and gold dress.

Princess Astrid wore one of my favourite hats of the day, a turquoise straw casque/beret adorned with embroidered silk ribbon flowers. Not only is the colour spectacular on her, the hat’s embellishment is wonderfully unique. We don’t often see embroidered hats and bringing an almost forgotten technique such as ribbon embroidery into millinery design is a stroke of brilliance. The hat has a decidedly retro feel (I’m sure some of you will have stories about similar hats you remember from the 1960s) but still feels modern and fresh, which makes it all the more perfect for Princess Astrid today.

Today’s festivities concluded with a more informal Garden Party for 600 guests, held at the royal residence, Stiftsgården. The dress code included festive Midsummer floral wreathes on all female members of the family.
This is certainly not an adornment we often see on royal heads but certainly fit the informal feel of this part of the day’s celebration and it does look downright celebratory. Floral wreathes go hand in hand with eyelet lace prairie dresses and the Crown Princess seemed to be in her element here- I can’t remember her ever looking so happy in a headpiece!
