Swedish Royals Celebrate National Day

King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden kicked off celebrations for Sweden’s National Day yesterday with a visit to Ånge. For this visit, Queen Silvia repeated her white straw pleated calot hat trimmed with a net veil and rosettes at the back. While this is a good hat style for her (particularly with her hairstyle), I would love to see her try something more modern.

In the afternoon, the Swedish Royal Family left the Royal Palace by carriage to attend a National Day concert at Skansen. Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria and Princess Madeleine all wore Swedish national dress complete with distinct folded white caps.

Little Princess Estelle joined the procession, also dressed in national costume with a white bow in her hair. I can’t decide what is more adorable- her hairbow or her royal wave?

As this was Princess Madeleine’s first wearing of national dress as a married woman, she was able to add the folded white cap to her ensemble for the first time. She wears it well, doesn’t she?

Hats, flags and nationalism aside, there were two images of the day that were most special. The first was Princess Madeleine presenting her baby daughter Princess Leonore to the Swedish people for the first time. Little Leonore did not wear a hat but she did appear in miniature national dress.

The second was this image, released by the Swedish Royal Court, of this future Swedish Queen in national dress and white hair bow. Adorable, isn’t she?

Te Deum for the New Princess

The Swedish Royal Family formally celebrated the birth of their newest member, Princess Leonore, with a Te Deum service in the Royal Chapel in Stockholm. Queen Silvia wore a classic pillbox hat in powder pink to mark this celebration of her new granddaughter. I can only imagine the colour of this hat was deliberate (cue the “aaahs”) and Silvia always looks good in a pillbox.

Crown Princess Victoria wore a large white feather fascinator around her chignon. To be honest, I thought it was messy headpiece and made her look like a kagu. I want to be kind but I know she can do so much better.

Countess Marianne Bernadotte of Wisborg (widow of King Carl Gustaf’s uncle Count Sigvard Bernadotte of Wisborg) chose what looks like a hat with a wide fur upturned brim. While I am not usually a fan of fur hats, I do like how well this one paired with the matching stole and cuffs on her coat. The whole look was quite regal.

Sofia Hellqvist, longtime girlfriend of Prince Carl Philip, wore small beaded black headpiece. It’s a little small and cutesey for me but since she is not officially a royal it seemed appropriate. Since we see Sofia consistently at these Swedish Royal Family events, I can only imagine it is a matter of time before she officially joins the family.

Swedish Royals Attend Umeå Opening

The northern Swedish city of Umeå, appointed the 2014 European Capital of Culture 2014, welcomed Princess Victoria, Prince Daniel and Princess Estelle to opening weekend of the festival yesterday. The royal trio stayed warm at the outdoor event in warm wool hats. Princess Estelle, as usual, looked  adorable in her cable-knit hat with pom pom.

Your Favourite Royal Hats of 2013

The Royal Hats BlogI so enjoyed hearing about your favourite royal hats of 2013! It was wonderful to look back at some of the lovely hats we have seen this year and hear the reasons why your favourites are your favourites. During the course of our discussion, ten hats emerged as the Favourite 10 Royal Hats of 2013 (click on each photo to link back to the original post for designer and photo credit information):

And the winning favourite, by a landslide, is Queen Mathilde of Belgium in the unforgettable pink hat designed by Fabienne Delvigne that she wore on the day she became queen.

Congratuations also go to Edouard Vermeulen of the fashion house NATAN for the beautiful dress Queen Mathilde wore. I think you’ll all agree that this would not be nearly as effective or beautiful without this particular dress.

Stay tuned tomorrow as we cheekily turn our discussion to our least favourite royal hats of 2013!

Princess Victoria Attends Mandela Memorial

Crown Princess Victoria represented the Swedish Royal Family at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service in Johannesburg today. She wore a simple black straw picture hat with band around the crown.

In sorting through pictures from this event, I do not believe any of the other royals in attendance wore a hat.
